HR 2749: The food fascism act of 2009?
8/31/09 Opinion by Chris Lostaglia (pictured), Examiner.com— The House of Representatives has passed resolution 2749 which severely regulates the food industry and America’s small natural food farms. The resolution greatly amplifies the power of the Secretary of Health and Human Services and lays a yolk of terror and bankruptcy around the neck of any organic food endeavors ..... The regulation of the food industry does not stop at our borders however. Section 208 specifically states that a foreign inspectorate shall be created. This means that members of the administration of the president of the United States of America will be on foreign soil, enforcing American law. If none of this makes any sense to you, do not fear. The bill also requires the creation of a public education program that will explain to you the great and impending doom of food-borne illness outbreaks (which the document states is any outbreak of two or more incidences) and the dangers of disallowing big brother from telling you what’s for dinner. NUGGETS FOR NOGGINS'
You've got to be original, because if you're like someone else, what do they need you for?
Bernadette Peters,
actress
  ON THE RECORD
Healthy eating is still important to consumers, but evidence strongly suggests that it is a lower priority these days. consumers are economizing in their food expenditures and believe that one way to do so is to spend less on healthy foods. It’s an unfortunate development.
Bob Goldin, Executive Vice President, Technomic, quoted 8/25/09, Business Wire.

We [industry leaders] own the food safety culture. If your organization has a less than
acceptable culture, it’s because you’re OK with that

Frank Yiannas, vice president, food safety, Wal-Mart Stores. Read more

Sixty percent of adults can't digest milk
USA Today— Got milk? If you do, take a moment to ponder the true oddness of being able to drink milk after you're a baby. No other species but humans can. And most humans can't either. The long lists of food allergies some people claim to have can make it seem as if they're just finicky eaters trying to rationalize likes and dislikes. Not so ..... Milk's different. First off, most people who have bad reactions to milk aren't actually allergic to it, in that it's not their immune system that's responding to the milk. Link.

Report maps out solutions to child obesity USA Today— To make it easier for children to eat healthfully and move more, local governments in towns and cities across the country need to help create a better environment, a new report says. Children and their families should have access to grocery stores that offer plenty of healthful food such as fruits and vegetables, and schools shouldn't be surrounded by fast-food restaurants. Consumer Reports: Store Brand Food
Can Be Superior To Big Name Brands

Tod Marks, Sr. Project Editor, Consumer ReportsShopping: "Our tests should erase any lingering doubts that store-brand packaged goods aren't at least worth a try"
Fox News— From oatmeal cookies to frozen broccoli, Consumer Reports blind taste tests found 23 store-brand foods that tasted as good as, or better than, their big national brand competitors in head-to-head tests of 29 food products. Consumer Reports tasters actually preferred Archer Farms Chewy Soft Baked cookies (Target), Kirkland Signature Organic Medium Salsa (Costco), Great Value Whipped Topping (Walmart) to similar products from Pepperidge Farm, Old El Paso, Betty Crocker and Kraft. Why Mars Snackfood USA Scuttled Skittles Twitter Ploy
The company...soon lost control of the idea. Tweets came in with messages such as "If you eat Skittles you support killing kittens and puppies"
Investors Daily— At first, it seemed like the perfect marketing ploy. Mars Snackfood decided in March to engage a teenage, candy-consuming audience by featuring a live Twitter feed on its home page. Anyone who included the word "Skittles" in their 140-character entry would be featured on the Web site. The "Skittles" idea ended up getting a lot of attention — for how not to use social media in marketing. Mars didn't respond to requests for comment. Link.

NPD Research Reveals Snacking is on the Rise
Ann Hanson, NPD: “The strong projected growth in snacking is both a reflection of the growth in new types of snack foods as well as an evolution of how consumers eat"
Progressive Grocer— Snacking is only getting bigger, according to new research from The NPD Group. In a recently released report on predicted changes in American eating through 2018, the market research firm finds that snacks are quickly gaining momentum as consumers continue to look for on-the-go meal options. Overall snacking occurrences are predicted to increase by 18.5 percent—from 86,515 incidences in 2008 to 102,540 incidences by 2018. Link.

Opinion: Will America run out of sugar by the end of the year?
A group of food industry officials have convened to try and find ways to keep that from happening. Among them are Kraft, General Mills, and Hershey
Examiner.com column by Patricia Walston— It seems that there is a tariff on how much sugar can be imported to the United States each year. While all of us could do with a little less sweets – this will affect more than the sugar in your coffee and tea; or your “occasional splurge” to fill up that sweet tooth ..... Who of us common folk would even have given a second thought to our “sugar fixes” but it seems the tariff is not only a protection from too many sugar imports; but perhaps a little smack of politics. Link.

The food industry isn’t looking for people to become more mindful eaters. If we were better about finding time and the mental pause to eat with our senses fully engaged, not only would we eat differently, but we might also eat different things. That might be bad for business. Instead, food companies manufacture stop-gap solutions–licenses to binge 100 calories at a time.

Walmart is Coke? Forgive me while I pick myself up off the floor laughing
According to this article, Walmart thinks its Great Value brand is on a par with Coke. Andrea Thomas, senior vice president of private label brands for the Bentonville Behemoth, says: "The Great Value brand is the largest consumer packaged goods brand in the United States, on par or bigger than national mega brands such as Coca-Cola, Tide, Cheerios and Ocean Spray, which each tally more than $200MM in annual sales. We are right there with them, the Wal-Mart private brand is every bit as big, sometimes even bigger." ..... Thomas is touting the re-launch of Walmart's Private Label business, which frankly has fared poorly in comparison to rivals Safeway, Kroger or (overseas) Tesco. It's one of the few areas in food where the retail giant has stumbled. And some of her hyperbole is part of the erosion of the word "brand" which used to mean something, but now is applied to everything ..... But the real problem is that Walmart is equating size with brand status. Yes, consumers buy a lot of PL products, and the new packaging likely will improve sales. Yet it's unclear whether over the long haul consumers are going to remain loyal to private label products to the same degree they are to national brands, and aren't just buying these products based on price.

Product Review: New Horizon Little Blends are an excellent snack for baby
There's a healthy new alternative to plain old baby food on dairy shelves in your local supermarket. Horizon brand dairy products have come out with Little Blends yogurt cups. It's a serving of whole milk yogurt along with a pureed fruit and vegetable in each cup. When I first picked up the combination of apples and butternut squash, I was curious if my already picky eater would like it, but she loved it. Horizon has made a natural yogurt including DHA Omega-3 (which supports eye, brain, and heart health), calcium, protein and probiotics and combined it with delicious fruits and veggies. What the product doesn't include is artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, and sweeteners.

Survey says, most Canadians don't eat lunch at lunch!
More than half of Canadians (53 per cent) spend the majority of lunch break reading, surfing the web, or working, according to an Angus Reid survey for ConAgra Foods Canada. In fact, almost one in five Canadians do not stop for a lunch break at all according to the survey, which coincides with the launch of Healthy Choice Gourmet Steamers into Canada. The survey found that when Canadians do eat lunch they say they are looking for healthy ingredients (32 per cent), quality (25 per cent) and flavor (17 per cent). But the fact that more than a third of those surveyed only take a lunch break of 16-30 minutes suggests they are also looking for convenience ..... "Lunch is the fuel that powers us through half our day and an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but with few convenient, healthy and flavorful options out there, too many Canadians are shortchanging themselves," said Annabelle Nogueira, Healthy Choice Brand Manager.
