'Hubby Hubby' Ice Cream? You're Kidding Me, Right?
Yeah, I know, we all live in the new America where just about anything goes. Taking into account my 'dinosaur' status, I don't get Ben & Jerry's temporary renaming of its Chubby Hubby ice cream to Hubby Hubby to celebrate same-sex unions in Vermont. Do gays really think that's cute? I'm not sure this is a great PR move at a time when same-sex marriage remains controversial in most of this country, which is probably why Ben & Jerry's isn't taking the Hubby Hubby thing national. But it's being reported nationally. Look, let's get this straight, I'm at a point where I really don't give a rip what choices people make, but why would same-sex unionists be happy with Ben & Jerry's Hubby Hubby ploy? To me, it comes across as more of a Comedy Channel gag than a serious attempt to win gay market share. But that's just me, Mr. Fuddy-duddy, lamenting the way we demean the fringes of our culture with crass marketing tactics. I remember laughing out loud when I first read what Ben & Jerry's was doing. I mean, I understand what Ben & Jerry's is, so its coming out in support of gay marriage in America is no big surprise. But then why demean the support with a product that is more likely to draw 'chuckles' than be viewed as 'respecting' the gay culture with well-thought-out products that specifically appeal to gays. Who knows, maybe Ben & Jerry's thinks Hubby Hubby is just that. E-mail Bob.

NUGGETS FOR NOGGINS'
One problem with gazing too frequently into the past is that we may turn around to find the future has run out on us.
Michael Cibenko
  ON THE RECORD
There are many commandments in retail, but above them all is one rule: Know thy customer. If you run Wal-Mart, don’t stock Louis Vuitton. If you work at Toys ‘R’ Us, where some shoppers are kids, watch your language. And if you are the CEO of relentlessly progressive Whole Foods, the upscale grocery store that specializes in organic items, don’t come out against the Obama administration’s healthcare proposals.

Unless Americans radically rethink the way they grow and consume food, they face a future of eroded farmland, hollowed-out countryside, scarier germs, higher health costs — and bland taste
From 8/21/2009 Time Magazine article: "Getting real about the high cost of cheap food"

Campbell Revamps 'Chunky' Line: Full Serving of Veggies, 100% Lean Meat
Progressive Grocer— “Extensive research revealed men today are facing what we call a ‘male meal dilemma’ -- they’re having trouble finding convenient, satisfying foods that taste good and that they feel good about eating,” said VP of ready-to-serve soup Michael J. Barkley. “We saw an opportunity for Chunky to help solve that dilemma. We took what people love about Chunky and made it even better, with more high-quality, nutritious ingredients that taste great and fill you up.” Link.

Burger King Licenses Microwaveable Fries to ConAgra Foods
Sharon Miller, ConAgra: "Burger King's tremendous brand strength and reputation for great-tasting french fries give this new line...a head start in the marketplace"
Chain Leader— Burger King Corp. has entered into a licensing arrangement with ConAgra Foods Lamb Weston whereby Lamb Weston will introduce a retail line of crispy and flavorful microwaveable Burger King branded french fries that will hit shelves of select retailers, including Wal-Mart, this fall. King Krinkz, seasoned crinkle-cut fries, will be the first to market in early September, soon followed by King Kolossalz, extra-large fries, and King Wedgez, seasoned potato wedges. The price point for each 4.5-ounce box will vary among retailers. Link.

Small Food Producers Question Greater FDA Powers
New food safety legislation aimed at big producers will impose costly record-keeping and testing burdens on small farmers and food producers
Business Week— The intensive action is coming in response to a number of highly publicized food recalls involving everything from peanut butter to spinach to cookie dough to raw hamburger over the last three years. The new law would seem to reduce the chances of food contamination by clamping down on producers—requiring detailed, written, quality plans, more frequent FDA inspections, and tough penalties for violations. But when you speak with small producers such as Pascal Destandau, you have to wonder if the government is taking a sledgehammer to a porcelain cup. Link.

Water: the Newest Wave of Corporate "Social Responsibility"
So why are there critics of World Water Week? In a word, Nestlé
CounterPunch.org (Blog)— In 2007, not only did the world's largest bottler of water sponsor World Water Week, but speakers were also given bottled water to drink. Civil society groups protested and the plastic bottles disappeared, but Nestle did not ..... In other words, World Water Week has become an opportunity for companies selling water, beverages, and water and sanitation services to grab a seat at the table, as water practices and policies are discussed. It must also be a networking gold mine, where companies can pitch their services to government representatives from around the globe. Link.

Higher Beer Prices Raise Red Flag
With the Big Beer Companies Holding So Much Pricing Power, Is It Time for a Government Antitrust Review?
ABC News— Big Beer looks as if it's testing President Obama's tolerance. Both Anheuser-Busch InBev -- purveyor of the president's preferred brew, Bud Light -- and MillerCoors, a joint venture between SABMiller and Molson Coors (TAP), are raising prices at the same time, during a recession, and while beer demand is slumping. With an 80 percent market share between them, it almost begs for an antitrust review of the industry. Link.

With half of all teens going to the Internet for health information, marketers must create a comprehensive and diversified online marketing plan - otherwise they will miss reaching half of their target audience..

How Kraft's Double Stuf Oreo Launch Trumped Expectations
Kraft Foods broke a major campaign Monday behind its new Golden Double Stuf Oreo. But it won't come as a surprise to many social media users, who have been generating buzz around the product since the food giant launched a teaser spot last week. Golden Double Stuf Oreo—which has twice the amount of vanilla filling as a regular Oreo cookie—hit store shelves in early August, retailing for $4.19. The regular version, Golden Oreo, is currently the best-selling brand in the vanilla sandwich segment, per Kraft ..... The Oreo brand also has garnered 2.4 million fans on Facebook, so when Kraft posted a video, titled, “Donald J. Trump’s Golden Double Stuf Oreo Press Conference,” following its media event in New York City last Thursday, the response was immediate. Facebook users began speculating whether Donald Trump was going to buy Oreo’s Double Stuf Racing League (DSRL), which Kraft introduced in 2008. (The league is a competition where family and friends face off to see who can twist, lick and dunk an Oreo cookie into a glass of milk the fastest.)

Too Much Government Makes Us Sick
While Congress is busy working on health care reform, policy-makers are reluctant to admit that many of our nation’s health problems are linked to practices subsidized by taxpayers. An American diet heavily dependent on corn and corn-derivatives is linked to obesity, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, Type II-Diabetes, constipation, joint pain, and other ailments. The tragic irony is that government subsidizes the low-cost production of the corn-based, unhealthy foods that make many people sick. Now the Obama administration wants to give these same policy-makers responsibility for our health care. According to the Environmental Workers Group, corn subsidies in the United States totaled $56.2 billion from 1995-2006. This government intervention has encouraged the widespread use of corn syrup as a sweetener in many manufactured foods.

Restaurants Look Beyond Chicken Fingers
Restaurants trying to get more families to dine out have a new recipe: Get rid of the French toast sticks. Put more broccoli and carrots on the menu. Let the kids eat free. The industry is scrambling to counter a tendency by recession-pinched parents to leave their children at home when they go out to eat. Restaurant visits among groups with kids fell 5% in the 52 weeks ended June 30 compared with a year earlier, according to researcher NPD Group. Restaurants are responding with revamped kids' menus, healthier food and kids-eat-free nights. Such moves are tricky to do well because restaurants must appeal to young palates while addressing parents' health concerns. This summer, P.F. Chang's China Bistro Inc. and The Cheesecake Factory Inc. added their first-ever kids' menus.

cc: Quality of Store Brands vs. Big Name Brands
G’day Bob ... Interesting article about quality house brands. The more things change the more they stay the same!!! When I lived in South Africa, over 25 years ago, Woolworths was known for having house brand products that were better than brand products. One of my associates was with Nestle in South Africa and he confirmed to me that fruit yogurts sold under the Woolworths house brand name-but supplied by Nestle-contained more fruit than their own brand product!!
