Boycotting Whole Foods is a Dumb Idea
8/17/09 blog by Megan McArdle (pictured), The Atlantic: The CEO of Whole Foods is not allowed to have a different opinion from you on a national domestic policy issue? Really? Not that I'm exactly sweating for the fortunes of Whole Foods. Quick: name the last time a consumer boycott achieved a result of any significance. (Getting American Airlines to stop using animals in its ads doesn't count.) I have to go all the way back to the Montgomery Bus Boycott ..... Here's why boycotts don't work: the vast majority of customers don't care. And yes, that includes the vast majority of Whole Foods customers, a surprising number of whom drive SUVs and even--I swear!--occasionally vote Republican. Now consider the demographic that cares enough about health care to actually boycott a company over it. Most of them are a) wonks or b) political activists. The latter group is disproportionately young and does not spend a great deal of money on groceries. The former group is tiny. Read more.

NUGGETS FOR NOGGINS'
Living the past is a dull and lonely business; looking back strains the neck muscles, causing you to bump into people not going your way.
Edna Ferber
  ON THE RECORD
With their immense powers of propaganda and interventionism, the authorities are using panicky stories about health to determine how we live. But neither charities nor the government knows what is best for us, especially if they are prepared to use junk science to try to micromanage our lives. A little less food-obsessed state and charity intervention in our lives, and a bit more trust of everyday people, would go down a treat right now.

By demanding we all pay more to fund their agendas in these harsh economic times, foodie
snobs and lefty social critics may as well tell us to eat artisanal cake

Expert panel says Sucralose safety Evidence is ‘scientifically sound’
Food Navigator— Studies reporting that sucralose may be detrimental to gut health were “not scientifically rigorous”, and the totality of evidence supports the safety of the sweetener, an expert panel has concluded. Last year scientists from Duke University reported that consumption of the sweetener Splenda at doses within the US FDA’s Acceptable Daily Intake may suppress beneficial bacteria in the gut, and cause weight gain. Report: Pilgrim's Pride Nears $2B Sale to JBS Charleston Daily Mail— Beleaguered chicken producer Pilgrim's Pride Corp. is nearing a sale to Brazilian beef producer JBS SA for $2 billion ..... The Wall Street Journal reported that a deal to sell the Pittsburg, Texas-based company could be announced next week, saying negotiations were in their final stages Wednesday, but it said the deal "could still fall apart at the last moment. Link.

Opinion: Should Ben & Jerry's have come out for gay marriage?
Are food companies trying to take a leaf out of pop stars' books by taking publicity-generating stands on political issues?
The Guardian, UK: It seems you can't fill a shopping basket these days without also buying into some sort of ideology ..... These kind of gestures don't always end well - Starbucks famously had to cancel its widely-publicized free coffee on US presidential election day when it emerged that it could be a contravention of electoral law. Companies might do well to think these things through more before nailing their products to the mast of some campaign. Whatever next? Link.

Research shows US consumers ‘unaware of acrylamide
Survey of American consumers aged 25 and over...has found a wide gap between consumer and governmental concern
Food Navigator— The majority of US consumers are unaware of acrylamide even as major North American governments are taking action to deal with the suspected carcinogen, according to new consumer research ..... “Overall findings indicated there is virtually no awareness or familiarity of acrylamide among US consumers,” said vice president of business consulting for FD Curt Davies. “Upon learning of the acrylamide issue, however, nearly half of consumers are likely to self-educate about acrylamide to learn more as well as alter food consumption and food purchasing decisions. Blogger: Whole Foods and Michael Pollan: Wrong to the Core
The internet is still rocking with Whole Foods-shopper furor, union opposition, and wide-ranging political punditry
Barth Anderson, writing in the Huffington Post— Volatile tempers in the Whole Food smackdown got even hotter last Friday when the Omnivore himself, Michael Pollan (pictured), came out swinging on behalf of embattled Whole Foods CEO, John Mackey, in the face of a growing boycott against that company. But while newsworthy, Pollan's weigh-in may not be enough to mollify the opposition. In fact, in his New Majority remarks on the boycott, Pollan stumbles by falling into hyperbole, fallacy, and by misunderstanding what's actually happening in this particular food fight. Link.

Study: Social Net Branding Fails to Sway Women
Although marketers have made major inroads in reaching online audiences, their efforts have gained little traction with female consumers
Brandweek— "Brand marketers still have a fundamental misunderstanding of what a social environment actually means—people are communicating on their own terms," said Agency.com's Ashton. "[Marketers] need to find a way to disassociate the brand from product and associate the brand with lifestyle or something that has more meaning on a personal level. The selling opportunity will come on after you ultimately create a relationship with someone in these environments." Link.

Whole Foods Survey: Shoppers Eating More Meals at Home
Four in Five Adults Say Current Food Prices Have Affected How They Shop for Groceries, Yet Most Continue to Purchase Natural and Organic in Same Quantities as Always
Press Release— Two out of three (68%) U.S. adults have changed their cooking and eating habits because of the current state of the economy, with about half (51%) eating dinner at ..... Most adults (79%) say they cook while only 22% say they don't cook often or at all. Over half of all adults (54%) say they cook because it saves them money while 44% say they cook because they like to enjoy their favorite foods in the comfort of their own home. Link.

Michael Taylor the Food Safety Czar seems to have upset the left. So far, so good. But, I have to admit I am torn on this one. Mr. Taylor is a former Monsanto executive who helped draft the Food Safety Bill, which has upset the left. The bill will do away with hippie created farmers markets wherein they sell “organic foods” they grew and “organic soap” they apparently do not use. So far, so good. Two pluses for Mr. Taylor.

Mom Site Targets Kraft; Artificial colors not for some but for U.S.
There's a rising tide of angry consumers and a petition underway. The topic at hand? Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Actually Kraft food products in general. It turns out that Kraft has been making a different version of its products sold in Europe, Australia and other areas by removing the artificial colors and aspartame from the ingredients list. But it has not made similar changes in it's U.S. market (nor, one assumes, in less developed countries). These changes overseas are in response to consumer demand after studies reporting the negative effects of these substances on children ..... There is now a petition to convince Kraft to remove these neurotoxins from their products here in the United States. To do for American consumers what they have done for consumers overseas. An organization called www.MomsRising.Org has put the petition together and is seeking your signature to help convince Kraft to do the same thing they did overseas and remove these substances from their products.

Survey: Iowans urgently want updated food laws
Ninety percent of Iowan voters would like more government oversight of the food supply, according to a new survey commissioned by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The US food industry has been scarred by a spate of recent foodborne illness outbreaks, paving the way for a clutch of new proposals to overhaul the nation’s food safety system, including the Food Safety Enhancement Act, currently awaiting consideration by the Senate. The poll, which was conducted by Hart Research and Public Opinion Strategies, showed strong support for better government-regulated food protection, regardless of respondents’ gender, income or political affiliation, the researchers said. Nearly half of respondents (49 percent) said that what they had seen and heard in the past year had reduced their confidence in US food supply, and more than four in five (81 percent) said they thought the federal government should be responsible for making sure food is safe to eat.

Wolfgang Puck and Wife Sued Over Internet Move
In June Wolfgang Puck announced that he was trying to register .food as a new top-level domain for the Internet. Now, Eat Me Daily reports, the investors Mr. Puck was working with have sued him and his wife, Gelila. The plaintiffs, the companies Minds + Machines and Level Domain Holdings, and the investor Frederick R. Krueger, say Mr. Puck has stopped promoting the effort and that his wife falsely claimed to have connections with influential people in the media world who would help them ..... The plaintiffs also say that the Pucks interfered with the workings of their companies and demanded rights in almost all of Mind+Machines’s business involving domain names. Ms. Puck’s “behavior became forceful, abusive, and erratic,” according to the suit, which was filed on Tuesday in federal district court in Seattle.
