On the surface, new Hillshire 'Tub' of meat a good idea, but ...
Look, I love the idea of the new Hillshire Farm Family Size Lunchmeat Tubs, but why the typical resealable top? Why not a plastic cover that just snaps over the container, similar to how it's done with products like Cool Whip. To me, that would've said something 'unique' to the consumer, suggesting a faster, easier way to get to the meat. I suppose I'm nit-picking here because I really do like this product. I just think another step might've been taken to make these tubs stand out from traditional resealable meat packaging. The tub is cool but the resealable top is redundant in a category that could use a little 'fresh' thinking. I'm pretty sure Sara Lee would take issue with my perspective, but I feel like too many new product concepts simply don't try hard enough to wow consumers with packaging that communicates a whole new way of looking at a category. Of course, Sara Lee is worth billions and I can't afford a trip around the block, so what do I know?

  ON THE RECORD
While it's far from perfect, I say hurrah to the modern food system and for the choice, freedom, variety, security and massive pleasure it gives us. I have no doubt that our forebears would join the chorus, too.

If we were going to try to ban all the foods people were allergic to, pretty soon you're left
with a slim list of what kids can bring for lunch

Lilly Byrtus, regional co-ordinator for the Allergy/Asthma Information Association in Edmonton, Canada

Study: Late-night snacks could pack on the pounds
Reuters.com— Midnight raids on the refrigerator may have worse consequences than indigestion -- a study in mice boosts the theory that when you eat affects whether the calories go to your hips or get burned off ..... "Simply modifying the time of feeding alone can greatly affect body weight," researchers wrote. Link.

Kellogg Halts Production at Atlanta Plant After Listeria Discovery Supermarket News— Kellogg voluntarily ceased production at the plant upon learning that Listeria monocytogenes was found in a sample of its Buttermilk Eggo Waffles manufactured there. “Kellogg...is taking this step out of an abundance of caution as a potential food safety issue was identified through routine testing,” said spokeswoman Kris Charles. Link.

Ag industry defends itself over grisly chick video
Images in video aren't pretty, but industry groups say chicks die instantly
Business Week— Paul Lasley cringed when he heard about an undercover video showing unwanted chicks being tossed alive into a grinder at an Iowa hatchery. The images were
upsetting, to be sure, but as someone who grew up on a farm, Lasley knows that bringing meat and poultry to America's dinner table is often a grisly business ..... Animal rights groups, for their part, say the industry needs to change its ways and treat chickens, hogs, cattle and other animals with more care. Link.

Bob's Spin: Here's the problem for the ag industry now that a Vegan group has released the secretly-recorded video — most Americans think baby chicks are cute as can be. So it's difficult to watch this video as the new-born chicks tumble into the grinder, and it may force the industry to figure out a new way to manage the unwanted male chicks. Whether we like it or not, the food industry's slaughtering practices are now out in the public domain and you can't expect the American people not to have an adverse reaction to what they are witnessing. Email Bob.

Americans Don’t Know They’re unhealthy, says Mintel
Survey: Americans have unrealistic perception of their health and are particularly unaware of their weight problems
Food Navigator— More than two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and seeking ways to tackle obesity has become a top priority for US health authorities, as overweight people are at significantly higher risk of developing hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease ..... Senior analyst at Mintel Krista Faron told FoodNavigator-USA.com: “I think there is just a tremendous amount of self-deception. At the core, very few people want to admit they are not healthy.” Link.

U. of Illinois Researcher Petitions to Ban Trans Fats in the Diet
Kumerow: Everybody should read my petition because it will scare the hell out of them
HealthJockey.com— Dieticians may find this piece of news quite interesting. Fred Kummerow (pictured), a 94 year-old University of Illinois veterinary biosciences professor emeritus, still known to carry out research on the health effects of trans fats in the diet, filed a petition with the FDA last month. This petition aims at eradicating trans fats from food ..... Kummerow is of the opinion that the FDA's requirement, which began in 2006, that trans fats to be included on food labels, may be inadequate and deceptive. Link.

Top Consumer Trends: Trust, Control ... Playfulness?
While people "still feel pessimistic," there's plenty of evidence that they are lightening their mood as often as possible
Marketing Daily, UK— Oh, it's so nice to be right. When market researcher Mintel released its list of leading consumer prognostication late last year, it knew that financial worries would drag consumers' emotions down for much of the year, and put the spotlight on trading down and switching brands. But now that its data from the first six months of the year is available, the company has taken another look at its forecast. Link.

FDA Confirms Pepsi’s ‘Frog’tastrophe
Dead frog found in soda can tarnishes brand image
Progressive Grocer— A dead frog found in a Diet Pepsi can in Florida has quickly become an international topic of discussion. But Pepsi has not yet leapt to stifle the scandal’s digital sprawl. PepsiCo still had not issued a public response to the incident on the company Web site as of Friday, though Pepsi spokesman Jeff Dahncke reportedly said yesterday that the Orlando bottling facility that produced the can had been subsequently inspected by the FDA. Why do these activists have no qualms about abusing the legal system to push their agendas? The self-anointed "food police" at CSPI think that they know what's best for everyone, and that means you and me. CSPI folks believe they are their brother's keeper; the problem is that they are a very big brother in the Orwellian sense.
J. Justin Wilson, 8/14/09, San Diego Union-Tribune.

Nearly a third of Americans ‘very or extremely’ worried about food safety
As a high profile food safety bill awaits consideration in the Senate, a new survey shows the number of Americans who are very or extremely concerned about food safety has remained constant since late 2007 – at about a third ..... The research organization said that proportions of those who are or are not worried about food safety have stayed more or less the same over the past two years, although there have been spikes of concern around high profile food recalls and multi-state foodborne illness outbreaks. On average, only 11 to 13 percent of those surveyed said they were not at all concerned about food safety.

Humane slaughtering spearheads China's drive to promote animal welfare
It's a slaughterhouse, but not one where there's a great deal of squealing and struggling. Bathed in melodious music, freshly showered, a row of pigs strolls towards their fate one by one. Their heads are put into special helmets and they are stunned into unconsciousness before killing. The two-second electric shock gives the pigs no time for fear or distress, and ensures they don't feel any pain during slaughter. "We call this 'mercy killing,'" said Liu Zhenli, manager of the meat department of the Longda Foodstuff Group Co., Ltd. in east China's Shandong Province, the country's largest prepared foods exporter ..... Longda's practice epitomizes a growing trend in China's large-scale slaughterhouses where animal welfare is being given increasing attention. Their welfare is usually interpreted as the right for animals to be free from thirst and hunger, discomfort; pain, injury, and disease; and free from fear and distress as well as being free to behave normally.
