Starbucks as a metaphor for "us"
8/24/09 commentary by Bruce Maiman (pictured), Examiner.com— I wanted to bring up the matter of Starbucks. Its decline over the past year is, I think, a perfect analogy for what has happened to us here in the United States, and illustrates what I think is a dangerous character flaw in the American psyche. The simplest way to describe it would be to call it the notion of wanting more just for the sake of wanting more ..... Starbucks set out a goal for itself: It wanted to be the biggest coffee shop in the world with the most stores in the world --it was almost as if they wanted to do it so they could say they did it. They wanted bragging rights. This really crystallizes when you realize that 70 percent of the stores that closed, opened after the start of 2006, when the real estate meltdown quietly began to collapse --a parallel to and an indication that over-expansion ultimately was the economy's undoing. Greed ..... Ultimately we realize that if we never set foot into a Starbucks again, it won't really change our lives but it has always seemed symbolic to me about who we are, how we got here, and the price we're now paying for that trip. And, given that the chain has clearly been humbled by some harsh economic realities, I wonder if we've learned some hard lessons about our own greed, our own excess, and a realization that having enough is enough and having too much is not only unnecessary, but it can also be burdensome. CEO Mike Duke Says Wal-Mart Leverages Customer Research
Supermarket News- Mike Duke, president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart Stores, said he would step up the retailer's focus on consumer research and re-emphasize its commitment to operational efficiency to meet those customer's needs ... Wal-Mart announced one such initiative Friday, saying it has added "Family Night Centers" in its stores featuring specially priced board games, DVDs and snacks. Link.

Thousands of suppliers threatened by $300 million in Kraft cutbacks
Marketing analyst Chris Brockman: “You’re looking at a dramatic effect on the supplier base, leading to consolidation at that end as well.”
Food Navigator- Kraft Foods is slashing its supply chain costs by $300m - a decision that Leatherhead Food International predicts will dramatically affect suppliers and could result in casualties ... Brockman said Kraft’s move was a response to the weak global economy, as was its bid for UK-based confectionery giant Cadbury earlier this week, which would grow its presence in confectionery in the European market. Palm Beach Post- MolliCoolz Shakers, made with tiny ice cream beads, hit thousands of stores this year, but overall, new food and beverage product launches are down along with the economy. That could change in the next six to 12 months as food companies return to investing in research and development, said David Houser, an investment banker with Lincoln International, Chicago. Houser was among the speakers [last week] at a New Products Conference held by Prepared Foods magazine at The Ritz-Carlton. Link.

Commentary: Bottled water is not green
In 2007, U.S. bottled water consumption was more than 8 billion gallons, costing consumers almost $100 billion — more than 1,900 times the price of tap water
By JoAnne Skelly of the Nevada Appeal- Plastic bottles of water are everywhere. We buy them for our families. We get them at parties, meetings, events, schools and restaurants. Most of the empty bottles never make it to recycling. Eighty-six percent end up as garbage, almost 1,500 bottles per second, according to the Container Recycling Institute ... Bottled water is also costly for the environment with production, transportation, packaging and disposal of the plastic. Plastic persists in the environment. Link.

If Kraft starts to move its bid price upwards, then it will be down to CEO Todd Stitzer’s salesmanship and the appetite of investors
Article by John Waples- Ever since Todd Stitzer (pictured), chief executive of Cadbury, demerged the group’s drinks business last year, he has done everything he can to become the City’s investor pin-up. He has followed the rule book, turning it into a focused company with international reach and an exposure to emerging markets ... Against its international peers, Cadbury had looked undervalued, so much so that it allowed Kraft to offer a 40% premium to the pre-bid closing price. And still analysts are saying it is cheap. There are so many [favorite Cadbury Brands] to choose from that it's a little hard to pick. I'd have to say on a year-round basis I think Trident Gum. I'm a heavy, heavy user of that product. But I would say that, on a seasonal basis, I just love those Cadbury eggs. Those eggs are a one-of-a-kind experience. If you watch people eating them, the ritual that one uses to eat a Cadbury egg is not unlike the ritual that we talk about to eat an Oreo..

Lowering sodium consumption could save 18 billion annually in health costs
Reducing Americans' average intake of sodium to the amount recommended by health officials could save the nation as much as $18 billion annually in avoided health care costs and improve the quality of life for millions of people, according to a new RAND Corporation study. The study estimates that meeting national sodium guidelines could eliminate 11 million cases of high blood pressure nationally and extend the lives of thousands of people each year. The monetary value of the improved quality of life would be an estimated $32 billion annually, according to the findings published in the September/October edition of the Journal of Health Promotion ... The study is one of the first to estimate the economic benefits of lowering sodium consumption among the American public.

Kraft's quest for Cadbury could be sticky situation for company
Irene Rosenfeld (pictured), generally gets kudos for making progress in reviving Kraft Foods Inc. since she signed on three years ago as chief executive of the venerable but lumbering packaged-foods giant. But no matter what Rosenfeld has accomplished so far, this past week she may have forever linked her legacy at Kraft to a $16.7 billion unsolicited bid for Cadbury PLC. Cadbury rejected the offer, but Kraft is still in pursuit. The blockbuster deal would make strategic sense for Northfield-based Kraft, analysts say. But it's fraught with risk for Kraft's shareholders and for Rosenfeld personally.

French study says organic food is healthier
A new review from France has concluded that there are nutritional benefits to organic produce, on the basis of data compiled for the French food agency AFSSA. The conclusion opposes that of a UK study published last month. Whether or not organic food brings nutritional benefits over conventional food has been a matter of considerable inquiry and debate. The issue came to a head last month when a study commissioned by the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) concluded that there is no evidence of nutritional superiority. Now, however, a review published in the journal Agronomy for Sustainable Development has said drawn wildly different conclusions.

The growth of Hispanic TV homes continues to outpace the general market. The number of Hispanic TV homes grew 2.3 percent to 12.9 million compared to a 0.3 percent increase among total U.S. TV homes, according to Nielsen's new universe estimates for the 2000-10 TV season, released (Sept. 4).

California firm recalls Beef & Bean Burritos For Possible Listeria Contamination
Windsor Foods, a Riverside, Calif., establishment, is recalling approximately 2,268 pounds of beef and bean burrito products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced. 
WASHINGTON: Cascioppo Brothers Meats Recalls Frozen Sausage Products
Cascioppo Brothers Meats, Inc., a Seattle, Wash., establishment, is recalling approximately 2,000 pounds of frozen sausage products because they may contain undeclared allergens, milk and soy.

UNITED KINGDOM: Placing Food Items By The Checkouts Can Decrease Purchase
A study has found that the location of fruit and chocolate items in a canteen can influence purchase of those items; but not in the direction that researchers predicted.
UNITED KINGDOM: TV product placement 'approved'
Product placement is to be allowed on British TV shows, in a move expected to be announced [this] week. Independent broadcasters will be allowed to take payments for displaying commercial products during shows.
UNITED KINGDOM: Unions warn Cadbury bid could bring job losses
Trade union Unite has expressed concern about cutbacks if US firm Kraft Foods takes over Cadbury, the British confectionery group that employs several thousand people at factories in the West Midlands and Somerset.
