The King of Kooks as Boss of America's Farmers? Preposterous!
I don't want to be a naysayer or join the growing chorus of critics bashing President Obama of late, on everything from health care to the nation's defense. Hey, the man was voted in, he's trying to put his agenda in play, I get it. But where Obama and me really part ways is his goofy choice of animal-rights advocate (and wacko?) Cass Sunstein as his regulatory czar. What's up with that? The word 'moderate' is not in this man's playbook. Instead the radical professor from the University of Chicago proposes wacko ideas like allowing farm animals and household pets to sue human beings, represented of course by government lawyers. He's also the one who suggested allowing sick elderly people to receive health care based on "Cost-Benefit Analysis." If Obama is trying to convince us he's a president for all Americans, he's doing a darned lousy job of it by inserting radical thinkers like Sunstein into positions of power. This man is the Antichrist to the ag industry. Nowhere in his thinking or his words is there any sense of understanding of what makes agriculture tick in this country. Do you know what this is all about? It's about Obama giving a powerful job to one of his best pals. Hope and change? Puh-leeze, where I come from this is good, old-fashioned 'cronyism' and 'machine politics' in action. E-mail Bob.

NUGGETS FOR NOGGINS'
You have to allow a certain amount of time in which you are doing nothing in order to have things occur to you, to let your mind think.
Mortimer Adler
  ON THE RECORD
We believe Hershey will be faced with a difficult competitive situation [cc: a bid for Cadbury]. If there was ever a time for the trust to reconsider its position of maintaining control of the company, this is no doubt it. The trust insists on keeping numerical control, which is unheard of today when you have to get bigger and you have to grow. It’s a 1930s mentality.
Stifel Nicolaus analyst Christopher Growe, quoted 9/12/09, Ethiopian Review.

Gluten is found in a lot of other products, like processed foods. The more processed the food is, the more likely you're going to see gluten in those products, because it's cheap

Gen Y forces retailers to keep up with technology, new stuff
USA Today- The next time you see a member of Generation Y, show some appreciation. In Gen BuY: How Tweens, Teens, and Twenty-Somethings Are Revolutionizing Retail, Kit Yarrow and Jayne O'Donnell say today's teens, tweens and twentysomethings "were the least likely to cut back spending after the onset of the 2008 recession." USDA seeks to define ‘natural’ claim Food Navigator- The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has said it is seeking comments over the use of the claim ‘natural’ for meat and poultry products, in a move that could determine whether it should define the claim at all ... FSIS has concluded that a further solicitation of comments could produce information that would help to clarify and resolve the issues surrounding the ‘natural’ claim.” Link.

Cadbury Chairman Insults Kraft in Open Letter
What remains to be seen is whether any other companies will jump in with competing offers. There has been speculation on that front, but so far no action
Bnet.com- It wasn’t enough for Cadbury to simply reject Kraft’s surprise $16.7 billion takeover offer. Cadbury chairman
Roger Carr
(pictured) had to spell out just how “unappealing” and “unattractive” he finds the prospect of a merger with “a low growth conglomerate” like Kraft. In an open letter to Kraft CEO Irene Rosenfeld, Carr described Kraft as “a company with a considerably less focused business mix and historically lower growth [than Cadbury]” and he reiterated that Cadbury is doing perfectly well on its own, thank you very much. Boston Globe Writer Questions General Mills Choice of Champions on Wheaties Boxes
"I’d like to see a Wheaties box featuring Sally Ride, the first American woman in space (who also happened to be an astrophysicist and a Stanford PhD)"
Boston Globe article by Scott Kirsner- Could Wheaties as a brand be reinvigorated if those bright orange boxes started celebrating achievements of the brain as well as the body? Would parents feel better about buying a breakfast cereal that inspired their children to become rocket scientists, disease-battling chemists, or billionaire software designers? And could we use the Internet and Twitter to persuade General Mills to give this a try? Link.

Datamonitor: How to keep the omega-3 health halo
Today we live in a label-reading culture. If messages are publicized well enough and repeated often enough then consumers will begin to take notice
NutraIngredients USA- The US food industry needs to help address a fundamental lack of consumer understanding about omega-3 if the ingredient is to maintain its ‘health halo’, says Datamonitor. Despite the emerging popularity of omega-3 in the past few years, it is still possible for manufacturers to do more in the way of promoting the ingredient and its benefits, due to the worry that it could drop from the consumer consciousness as quickly as it arrived. Carl's Jr.'s Beef With McD's Leads to Big Mac Bashing
Takes aim at McDonald’s best-known icon in its latest salvo against the chain. Call it a Big Mac freakout
Brandweek.com- The plan includes a new TV commercial for its Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s chains starring CKE president/CEO Andy Puzder and a two-pronged social media campaign in which comedians and others rant about how they are mad as hell and aren’t going to eat Big Macs anymore ..... Why so sensitive? Because McDonald’s trod on CKE’s turf by launching the Angus Third Pounder in July, a direct competitor to Carl’s Original Six Dollar Burger and Hardee’s Thickburger (both versions of these Angus options actually sell for $3.99). I don’t know if we’re savvy. I don’t know how to measure savvy. What I do know how to measure is engagement. One of the things that we believe very strongly in our marketing at Frito-Lay is never to chase the media or fad or whatever is the latest cool thing to do. What we try to do instead is figure out “What are the ideas?
Ann Mukherjee, group vp of marketing for Frito-Lay, quoted 9/13/09, Brandweek.com.

Kraft Executive Puts Focus on Cultural Preferences
For a long time, Kraft Foods Inc., the second-largest international food company by revenue, struggled to make headway in Asia-Pacific, the world's most populous region. "The top line [revenue] was sluggish, profits were under squeeze. And critically, we didn't have a strategic direction," says Pradeep Pant (pictured), Kraft's president for Asia-Pacific. "There was a lot of activity, a lot of churn, but not much impact." ..... Before joining Kraft, Mr. Pant, a 55-year-old Singaporean, was managing director for Asia, Africa and the Middle East at Fonterra Brands, the consumer-products and food-services division of dairy cooperative Fonterra, New Zealand's largest multinational company by revenue. Prior to that, Mr. Pant spent 20 years with Gillette Co., now a unit of Procter & Gamble Co., in several markets, including Southeast Asia, Russia and Turkey. Ven Ram interviewed Mr. Pant at his office in Singapore. The interview has been edited.

American Egg Board Launches Pledge Campaign
America's egg farmers are asking people to take the Good Egg Project pledge to "Eat good. Do good everyday." For every pledge at GoodEggProject.org, farmers will donate one egg to Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger relief charity, up to 1 million eggs ..... The effort is designed to educate Americans about modern egg farming, introduce them to egg farmers and encourage them to eat well and do good every day. Egg farmers already donate millions of eggs per year to food banks and charities across the nation, but the need for food is growing. In 2007, more than 36 million Americans—about 11% of all U.S. households—lived in "food-insecure" households, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Wells' Dairy helps region rank high in food processing
Plymouth County's largest employer helped push the Sioux City metro region to the top of the list for food processing industry growth in a New Jersey magazine. Sioux City, along with the surrounding area, was picked as the Top Metro for Food Processing Industry Growth in the August issue of "Business Facilities." It is, the magazine said, the leading growth center for food processing, food products and agribusiness. And Wells' Dairy, of Le Mars, is listed as one of the major food processing employers at the center of "a huge food-oriented job-creating engine," according to the article "2009 Metro Rankings." Wells' Dairy spokesman Dave Smetter said there are a number of reasons the ice cream and frozen novelty company finds this region so attractive. "Our heritage has been here. We grew up here," he said.

Organic foods are now ‘mainstream’, says USDA
Organic food has entered the mainstream with strong growth in all sectors over the past decade, including packaged and prepared foods and beverages, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) ..... The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service said: “Organic products have shifted from being a lifestyle choice for a small share of consumers to being consumed at least occasionally by a majority of Americans.” ..... And while concerns have been raised that consumers may not be prepared to pay steep premiums for organic foods, Economic Research Service (ERS) data has shown that consumers are buying organic foods at significantly higher prices than conventional.

Report: Consumers crave premium burgers
America's love affair with the hamburger is no fair-weather fling. The recession has many cash-strapped consumers skimping on discretionary purchases, but when it comes to ground beef, frugality and thrift are apparently not on the menu. Meat loaf? Hamburger Helper? No way! Not when there's Angus and Wagyu beef to be had. That premise that Americans won't stint on beef is supported by new research from Chicago-based Technomic Inc., a consulting firm to the food-service industry. In a report titled "Burger Consumer Trend Report," Technomic found that restaurants are gravitating toward the "premiumization," or premiumization, of the hamburger.

Putting the Function in Beverages
Water is no longer just water. It contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Orange juice is fortified with vitamin D. Coffee is purchased in cans, complete with ginseng and echinacea. We have moved from a culture that prepares three full meals a day to one that is looking to find the same nutritional intake from a convenient drink. Beverages now multi-task, serving functions beyond hydration. The functional beverage market continues to see a boost in volume sales, with a 74-percent increase during the past five years. The call for value-added beverages containing vitamins, minerals, herbals, calcium, energy, protein, fiber and more continues to evolve as consumer needs change. The result has created challenges in terms of taste, mouthfeel and drinkability.
