ConAgra CMO Joan Chow deserves praise for work she's done
For the record, I don't know Joan Chow, ConAgra Foods' exec. vp and chief marketing officer. A lot of new faces are in leadership positions in Omaha since the last time I visited there. But Chow was just named one of Brandweek Magazine's 2009 Marketers of the Year, which acknowledges industry marketing talent that doesn't mind breaking a few dishes, bending a few rules, or daring to be different during brand-building efforts. Consider the current upside of some of the once-stale, slow-growth brands that lingered in ConAgra's cupboard, that Joan Chow and her team have reinvigorated with her leadership and ideas. Big-time challenges. Most brand managers would rather do anything than accept responsibility for resurrecting so-called "tired-old brands", which lack the excitement and sexiness of driving totally new concepts into the marketplace. Once a brand has gotten old and tired, few managers bang down the door to demand the challenge of building up new energy. But here's the deal, you take on that challenge and succeed, you are magic. I've always said, if I were a young brand manager, I'd want the opportunity to resuscitate core brands that have grown stale. Succeed at that and your path is golden. So I admire Joan Chow for having the brass neck needed to tackle things that are on life support and reviving their momentum in a tough and demanding consumer environment. It takes one tough cookie to pull that off.

NUGGETS FOR NOGGINS'
Winning is important to me, but what brings me real joy is the experience of being fully engaged in whatever I'm doing.
Phil Jackson
  ON THE RECORD
Now the kids from Kraft Foods have decided that putting cheese slices together with Dairy Milk chocolate presents an irresistible opportunity. Yet for all the talk of building "a global powerhouse in snacks, confectionery and quick meals," powerhouses do not command high ratings in the stock market. Unilever NV, for all its valuable brands, currently stands at less than 13 times the latest 12 months' earnings.

Nearly 30 percent of the nation's population has hypertension. One of the reasons that hypertension is so pervasive is that sodium consumption is so high

If JBS-Pilgrim’s deal Succeeds, Four mega-firms will dominate meat landscape
Grist.org- While we await and announcement, it’s worth considering what the U.S. meat industry would look like if JBS swallowed Pilgrim’s Pride. Essentially, it would look like this: four giants (JBS, Tyson, Cargill, and Smithfield) lumbering across the landscape, towering over and stepping on their farmer suppliers. Link.

Kraft: No need to sell assets for Cadbury bid Reuters.com- Kraft Foods Inc does not need to sell operations like Oscar Mayer hot dogs, Maxwell House coffee or any of its other brands to afford its $16 billion bid for British confectioner Cadbury, Kraft said on Tuesday. "The financing for this proposal does not require any divestitures," Kraft spokeswoman Perry Yeatman said. Link.

Canadian Study Says Voluntary action
on sodium by Industry is not enough

Governments should use regulation to reduce sodium consumption as the food industry is not doing enough, according to the authors
Food Navigator- The authors write: “From a food technology perspective, it is unclear how quickly and extensively sodium can be reduced in foods without impacting consumer appeal.” ..... However, the authors wrote that an approach based on regulation and partnership between the food industry and government is likely to be more effective. This idea is based on Finnish experience, which has seen sodium consumption – and blood pressure – plummet following a plan “anchored on partnership and regulation of the food industry and consumer education via mass media.” Link.

Research Update: Junk food makes you eat more
Fat from certain foods including ice cream and burgers goes straight to the brain and tells you to eat more, new research reveals
The Telegraph of London, UK- It triggers messages that are sent to the body's cells, warning them to ignore appetite-suppressing hormones that regulate our weight. The effect can last for a few days sabotaging efforts to get back to a healthy diet afterwards, the study found. The study shows for the first time how particular products can create a vicious cycle of food bingeing. Lead author Dr Deborah Clegg of the study by UT Southwestern Medical Centre in Dallas, said: "Normally, our body is primed to say when we have had enough, but that does not always happen when we are eating something good. Sara Lee Brings 'Mama Saga' to Social Nets
With back-to-school in high gear, Sara Lee is launching the first big social media push for its deli meats division
Brandweek.com- Paula Shikany, senior brand manager for Sara Lee’s North American retail deli meats, said the push is part of the division's goal to get into the social media space ... With Mama Saga in particular, Sara Lee saw an opportunity to tap into a growing demographic of tech-savvy moms. “We’re focusing on moms who are really active in the online and social media space,” said assistant brand manager Becky Thomas. She added that Sara Lee is hoping to appeal to moms by depicting “some of the challenges of parenting” in humorous situations. Link. View the video.

[Animal rights activist Cass Sunstein (pictured) and Obama's new Regulatory Czar] is very careful and will go about his transformation in a methodical and subtle way. He is likely, I think, to use the USDA to take meat and dairy products out of school lunches and is likely to use the Department of Interior to stop hunting and fishing on federal land and will use the USDA to make it difficult to use animals as lab rats for curing cancer and AIDS. That's a huge problem.

New cranberry technology tackles tartness
A Wisconsin-based company claims it has developed a method to significantly reduce cranberry acidity without using chemicals or additives, which could lead to low- and no-sugar cranberry products. Cranberries can cause problems for food manufacturers due to their high acidity, which can interfere with the leavening process in bakery products or leave very tart and bitter flavors. Where cranberries are used, the tartness usually needs to be offset by large amounts of sugar. Jonathan Smith, president of Alpine Foods and developer of the acidity-reducing technology, told FoodNavigator-USA.com that he has developed a way to tackle this problem, using temperature, pressure, vacuum and quick freeze technology. This process, claims Smith, retains most of the juice, while eliminating much of the acidity. “I use the cell wall as its own molecular sieve,” explained Smith, who has three patents pending on the technology.

New Jennie-O Ad Campaign Inspires Viewers to Conquer Fears, Live Healthier
No matter who they are, where they live, how much they make, or what they do for a living, people put a premium on their health; virtually everyone wants to be well…but without giving up the things they love. Today, Jennie-O Turkey Store taps into that universal truth with the launch of three broadcast advertisements that put a personal face on the challenges and triumphs associated with weight loss, weight maintenance and wellness. “The Be Well campaign underscores an idea that has long been at the heart of our product portfolio: that lean protein can help people achieve the healthy lifestyles they desire,” said Cris Eide, vice president, director of marketing, Jennie-O Turkey Store. “The new TV ads are just one element of this campaign, which also includes sponsorship of NBC’s ‘The Biggest Loser’ for the fifth time, FSI’s and public relations programming.”

Trying to get a rise out of us, Bob?
I realize you probably say things just to get a rise out of your readership, but when Forbes.com, hardly a left wing evaluator, describes [Cass Sunstein, pictured] as an “intellectual heavyweight who is progressive but not ideologue,” it makes your arguments all the weaker. Forbes also said his cost-benefit analysis approach to evaluating regulation is “thoughtful, pragmatic and fair.”
Frankie Whitman, VP Marketing, Full Bloom Baking Co.

Bob's Spin: Thanks for writing, Frankie, and, no, I'm not really trying to get a rise out of my readers ... I just think having an avowed animal activist (a very aggressive animal activist) wielding influence in the ag industry is a recipe for disaster. Of course, it's possible he will moderate his views, but anyone who thinks animals should have the right to sue humans using government lawyers, and who would just as soon we didn't eat meat, or very little of it anyway, is suspect to me. Don't you think that's a tad radical? As for his 'cost benefit analysis' concept, I guess I need to know more about what that means before being too critical. It just sounds to me like your out of luck health care-wise if your needs do not meet some 'cost benefit' agenda. I do not doubt Sunstein's intellect, I just worry about his occasional radical approach to resolving issues. But you could be right. Let's talk again in about a year. We'll be able to better evaluate Sunstein's performance then. Email Bob.
