Not a Glenn Beck fan, but food marketers play risky game with boycott
I watched Fox News talker Glenn Beck just once and thought he was a little too 'unhinged' for my tastes. I tend to be independent, which is why I shy away from ideologues whatever their political persuasion. But food marketers engaged in an advertising boycott of Fox's The Glenn Beck Show for stupidly calling President Obama a "racist", take a gamble when choosing sides, because, love him or hate him, Beck's 'conservative' bent is in sync with probably half the population. If anything, the advertising boycott by over 60 companies, including the likes of Wal-Mart, ConAgra, General Mills and Kraft, has boosted the sometimes rabble-rousing Beck's popularity with so-called conservative Americans. I understand the pressure felt by these boycotting marketers to punish Beck by pulling their ad bucks off his show, but I still think most boycotts by marketers are risky business because they leave behind millions of Americans who may not see it the way they do. In fact, Beck's audience has grown since the boycott began, to nearly three million viewers a day. When three million consumers will not see your marketing messages, how is that a good thing? I found what Beck said to be "repugnant", but, shoot, ever listen to the vile sometimes spewed by Bill Maher? But I wouldn't want him boycotted either. It's about free speech and Beck and Maher exercise it in ways that many may find distasteful. I respect the principled stand taken by the boycotters, I just think boycotts don't work, other than to make half the people happy and half the people angry. How is that a winning strategy?

NUGGETS FOR NOGGINS'
It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not to deserve them.
Mark Twain
  ON THE RECORD
It is still far from clear whether Hershey will throw its hat in the ring. The hurdles to a bid of its own are formidable, starting with the fact that Hershey is considerably smaller than either Kraft or Cadbury ... But since no other company could give Hershey the exposure to foreign markets and new products that Cadbury would, Hershey will have to take a serious look, a point underscored by the legion of bankers it has rounded up.

What Gen Y doesn't want is heavy-handed advertising aimed at them. Although if the appeal comes in a 20%-off text message on their cell phone, they'll take a look

Ice Cream Trademark Claims

Nestle and its Dreyer’s ice cream unit’s Skinny Cow brand accused of improperly displaying Weight Watchers trademark on Web sites and packaging
Bloomberg.com- “Nestle’s Lean Cuisine and Skinny Cow brands are intended to target directly weight and health-conscious consumers -- precisely the individuals who follow Weight Watchers International’s points system and who purchase products that are sold under the Weight Watchers brand,” according to the complaint. As parent company to Jenny Craig Inc., a competitor to Weight Watchers in the weight loss industry, Nestle is unfairly benefiting from the trademark infringement by wrongly associating itself with Weight Watchers, according to the complaint. Food Industry Is Now Calling Junk Food 'Healthy' - Why Could That Be? Blogger: It's a PR Scam

Cadbury [would provide Kraft Foods] not only a strong brand in the chocolate segment but also helps them strengthen their distribution and trade network across Europe and emerging markets. This is particularly important as they look to increase growth of their existing products in the chocolate, coffee, biscuits and cream cheese categories.

From Fast Food Nation to Pro Food Ventures
In 2001, Houghton Mifflin Company published a book by Eric Schlosser titled Fast Food Nation -The Dark Side of the All-American Meal. Much like the work of Upton Sinclair in his 1906 title The Jungle, Mr. Schlosser, an award-winning investigative journalist exposed how the explosive growth of fast food in America had "hastened the malling of our landscape, widened the chasm between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and propelled American cultural imperialism abroad." For a handful of people, this book provided enough incentive to act, but nowhere near the critical mass needed to show up on most radar screens. That started to change with Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, published in 2006 and the 2009 release of Food, Inc., a food documentary incorporating much of the work of Schlosser and Pollan. Still, unless you were seeking out information on America's industrial food system, and specifically how it was negatively impacting health, regional economies, and the environment or global trade, you probably had no idea that there were significant problems with America's abundant food system ..... TIME Magazine changed that with its August 21, 2009 cover story titled Getting Real About the High Price of Cheap Food.

Cadbury pursuit could test Kraft CEO's patience
Earlier this year, Irene Rosenfeld (pictured) left no doubt as to what she would do with Kraft employees who stubbornly resisted a new set of values at the company. 'You roll right over them,' the chairman and CEO of the world's second largest food maker said. That strategy might come from Rosenfeld's passion for roller-blading. But it may take more patience than force to persuade Cadbury management and investors to accept Kraft's cash and stock bid for the British confectioner, currently valued at about $16.1 billion ..... Kraft has said it will be disciplined in its campaign and people familiar with Rosenfeld believe she is unlikely to allow her ego to push her into overpaying for Cadbury. 'That's not her approach,' said Ken Harris at consultancy Cannondale Associates, which has worked with Kraft. 'I don't think people would necessarily categorize her as having a huge ego and would go that way.'

New association urges industry to profit from ecological thinking
The food industry can clean up its image, benefit the environment, and become more profitable while doing so, says the founder of a new trade association, the Ecological Food Manufacturers Association (EFMA). EFMA has been formed in response to consumer concerns about food industry conduct, and its founder, Winston Riley (pictured), is now looking to get manufacturers on board. Riley comes from a food science background – he was the founder and first president of the Research Chefs Association ..... Riley told FoodNavigator-USA.com: “The idea is that this is a groundswell. This is a consumer-driven trend. I am concerned about our food industry when you think about it in terms of sustainable business practices. “…Our association is really responding to the consumer and then working with manufacturers to learn. I have always worked with the food industry but I want to help them make more money by doing the right thing.”

So, which Starbucks is this anyway?
Bob: You published this quote in [Thursday's] 'Cup:
Starbucks carpet-bombed the world with its franchises. The satirical newspaper The Onion [once] published a headline: 'New Starbucks Opens in Restroom of Existing Starbucks'
This reminds me of a cartoon I saw somewhere a few years ago (I think in the New Yorker), in which two guys are sitting drinking coffee at a table. One guy asks this other: "Are we in this Starbucks, or the one down the street?" ... Thanks for the Morning Cup, I enjoy it a lot.
