Twitter? Facebook? New Consumer Venues for Food Marketers?
I've actually read some commentary that suggests food and beverage marketers should be scrambling to tap into interactive, hot-button venues like Twitter and Facebook. Facebook is do-able, but Twitter? Twitter may be the dumbest idea ever invented. Do you folks actually read some of these um, Twitters? "Hi, I'm back home" "Hey, going to bed now" "Back soon, taking Muffy for a walk" ...  How does a food company effectively tap into an intellect-free environment like that, and why would they want to? Twitter is dumb. Facebook at least allows a marketer to offer followers some depth and insight and I can see how that might work. I'm willing to listen to other opinions, but for now I think Twitter is one of those 'here today, gone tomorrow' concepts that offers very little value to food and beverage marketers. And I'm not the only one dubious about Twitter's potential as a marketing tool. More than half (54%) of professional communicators think Twitter is a fad and believe the burgeoning number of users and tweets will eventually reach a plateau and likely decline, according to a poll by Ragan Communications and PollStreamE-mail Bob.

NUGGETS FOR NOGGINS'
To avoid criticism do nothing, say nothing, be nothing.
Elbert Hubbard (1856 - 1915)
  ON THE RECORD
If Hershey is really talking about acquiring Cadbury, then Hershey is probably talking to [Warren Buffett] about financing the deal like he did Mars/Wrigley. After all, Buffett has a sweet tooth for investment in candy and food companies, such as See's Candies and Coca Cola Co. Just because Buffett says Kraft has made its best offer doesn't mean he is keeping his hand out of the sugar bowl.
9/18/09 commentary by Maria Woehr, TheDeal.com.

Dairy farmers are in the worst shape I've ever seen ... Farms will go under unless something is done with milk prices, which have fallen to their lowest level in four decades
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, quoted 9/17/09, EinNews.com

Is That Right? High-Fiber Cereals Taste Better These Days
Washington Post blog by Jennifer LaRue Huget- Want a fiber-filled breakfast cereal that also happens to taste delicious? Get thee to Costco for a box of Kirkland Signature Spiced Pecan cereal. That's the only one of 18 high-fiber cereals evaluated by Consumer Reports to earn the rank of "Excellent" from the magazine's team of tasters. The Spiced Pecan cereal also got high marks for nutrition, based on Consumer Reports' crunching of the nutrition facts data. Link.

Behold, The Power Of Cheese And Chocolate InvestmentU.com- The typically sleepy world of food makers woke up this week to the loud sounds of Kraft’s bold takeover offer for Cadbury ... The merged company would combine Kraft’s clout with grocers and major retailers such as Walmart, with Cadbury’s mastery of sales at convenience stores, not to mention creating a new global powerhouse in snacks and confectionary. Unhealthy U.S. Diets Prompt More Calls For Reform
Feds and insurance industry may form unlikely alliance to demand food industry play a bigger part in getting Americans on a healthier footing
Reuters.com- The American way of eating is under attack, which could expose the food industry to new junk food taxes, but it's unlikely major reforms are in the offing to quickly alter U.S. food policies ..... Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity argues the government needs to aggressively combat the problem of unhealthful eating with junk food taxes and by rewriting agriculture policies to promote healthier choices. Link.

Study: U.S. food facilities flunk record-keeping test
Revelations of holes in U.S. food tracking system have some mulling regulatory solutions, while others tout technology fixes
DC Velocity- Since 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has required U.S. food facilities to maintain records identifying the source, recipient, and transporter of food products. The goal was to allow the FDA to trace food through each stage of the supply chain if the agency believed the product was tainted and posed a public health threat. However, a March 2009 report by the Inspector General's office of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) revealed that 59 percent of the 118 facilities surveyed failed to meet the FDA's record-keeping requirements. ‘Gut friendly’ pizza – coming to a neighborhood near you
Jeff Leach: “I didn’t go into this because I wanted to go into the pizza business,” he said. “The health of America is in free fall”
By Stephen Daniells, Food Navigator- With probiotic yogurt shots beginning to establish themselves on US grocery store shelves, are consumers ready for a gut-friendly pizza? ..... Naked Pizza started in 2006 and is the brainchild of Jeff Leach, an archaeologist by trade and head of Paleobiotics Lab, a New Mexico-based independent research group investigating the implications of dietary and nutritional evolution and its bearing on modern health. His knowledge of prebiotics and probiotics led him into a collaboration with business partner Randy Crochet to turn an unhealthy and popular fast food into a healthier and more nutritious product “in a truly meaningful way”. A Deeper Drill-Down Into the US Hispanic Market
Hispanic households across the United States will sharply increase their economic clout over the next ten years
Mediapost.com- According to a blog from Ethnic Technologies, prepared by Candace M. Kennedy, Hispanics love to buy and almost always buy in cash ..... . The demographic explosion has continued since 1990 and there is no let up. At Wal-Mart, Sears and K-Mart, to name a few stores, many Hispanic families are loaded with consumer goods ..... The U.S. Hispanic market is not homogeneous, says the writer. It is a market "comprised of subcultures from over 20 countries in Central and South America, the Caribbean and Spain, with the majority (63%) of Mexican heritage." Link.

Campbell Soup Considers Its Post-Recession Course
Andrew Brennan, vp and general manager for Campbell's U.S. soup division: "Consumers are still turning to comfort foods like soup and mac ’n’ cheese in tough times"
Brandweek.com- Earlier this month, Campbell Soup Co. reported a 22 percent drop in fourth-quarter profit, but that's not stopping the soup giant from brewing up some more innovation ... In September alone, Campbell announced it had reformulated its Chunky and iconic tomato soup products to contain more vegetables and meat and lower sodium, respectively. These days, the soup giant is focused on overhauling and reintroducing some of its best-selling soups, said Andrew Brennan (pictured), vp and general manager for Campbell's U.S. soup division. Brennan spoke with Brandweek about the company’s strategy. Link.

Coca-Cola still viewed as most valuable brand
“Coca-Cola is 123 years old and shows no sign of relenting,” the study said, crediting the company’s “Open Happiness” advertising campaign
USA Today- For the ninth consecutive year, Atlanta-based beverage giant The Coca-Cola Co. remained the most valuable brand in the world, according to a study issued Friday by Business Week and Interbrand. Coke, the world’s largest bottler, has been the No. 1 brand in the world since the study started in 2001. Link.

Pepsi Program Targets African-American Moms
Lauren Scott, senior manager of multicultural marketing: “What we wanted to capture is the strength, joy and wisdom of the African-American market"
Brandweek- Pepsi is targeting a somewhat overlooked demographic—African-American moms—with a digital community where such consumers will be asked to share personal and inspirational thoughts. The effort, promoted across various media with the tagline “We inspire,” will serve as the cornerstone of Pepsi’s African-American marketing outreach for 2010. Link.

There are lots of reasons why people overeat. One reason is a lack of education. That’s not to say that people are stupid, but more that our food industry likes to pack lots of salt, sugar and fat into meals and marketing them to people as “healthy.”

McDonald's, Burger King serve up premium gourmet burgers
The fast-food giants are pushing premium burgers with gusto. McDonald's Angus Third Pounder, rolled out nationally this summer, is the trend's 500-pound gorilla. Earlier this year, Burger King began to install new broilers in most stores to handle meatier offerings, such as its Steakhouse XT Burger. Wendy's won't talk about it yet but plans next month to launch the Bacon Deluxe, a premium bacon cheeseburger. Jack in the Box is in the mix with Mini Sirloin Burgers ..... Recession be damned, consumers are saying "no" to cheapo burgers. When they head to a fast-food burger joint to save money, many are spending more than ever. It's not as contradictory as it seems: The Angus premium burger can cost more than $6 as part of a Value Meal, but that's still cheaper than the $8 to $12 price of such burgers at sit-down casual dining eateries, so it feels like a bargain. "It may be the last affordable luxury," says Christopher Muller, restaurant management professor at University of Central Florida. "It's an easy way to reward yourself without feeling you've blown the bank."

Technomic gives downbeat outlook for restaurants
The punishing macro-economic environment will provide the foodservice industry this year and next with two consecutive years of sales declines for the first time, according to the latest data from Technomic Inc. Foodservice sales this year will drop 3.8 percent on a nominal basis, which includes the assumption of 2.5 percent in menu-price inflation, as the industry was hard hit by slashed consumer spending during the “great recession.” The outlook for 2010 includes the continuation of numerous challenges for restaurant operators, including a still depressed consumer and a more costly regulatory environment, and sales are expected to fall again, although at a lower rate than in 2009.

Zinc Plays a Key Role in Better Aging
The path to healthy aging has plenty of signposts -- eat more fruits and vegetables for their antioxidants, get enough calcium for strong bones, have a few fish meals a week to protect the heart. Here's another signpost that may be less familiar: Make sure you consume enough zinc. Two studies published this year addressed the role of zinc in maintaining health in older people. One, a yearlong study of 50 nursing home residents 65 or older found that people with low levels of zinc in the bloodstream -- defined as 70 micrograms per deciliter or less -- had twice the incidence of pneumonia and nearly 50% more antibiotic prescriptions over the year than those with normal zinc status.

Heinz sells Kabobs line
The H.J. Heinz Co. has sold its Kabobs frozen hors d'oeuvres business, including a factory in Lake City, Ga., according to a regulatory filing. The business was purchased by the Hunt Group, a private investment group in Atlanta, according to a Heinz spokeswoman. The Pittsburgh food company said the business, which had sales of about $17 million, was part of its U.S. Foodservice operation serving restaurants and cafeterias. As a result of the deal, Heinz will record a pre-tax loss of about $15 million

Costs Of Mediterranean Diet May Put People Off
Mediterranean diets may be healthier, but they also trim the wallet, which may put people off, suggests a study looking at food costs and weight loss, and published ahead of print in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health ..... The results showed that a higher Mediterranean diet score was associated with significantly higher daily costs; on the other hand, a higher Western diet score was associated with significantly lower daily costs. The higher the Western diet score, the less money was spent on food every day. A higher food spend was associated with eating both less, overall, consuming fewer energy dense foods, and snacking less between meals than those who spent less.
