Blogger Wonders: What's left to eat (safely)
8/11/09 column by Dawn Ellis-Lopez (pictured), Examiner.com: Anyone who has ever gone on a specialized diet knows the stress and difficulty that comes just from trying to find something that won't kill you in the short run, but we're finding more and more that everyday foods are going probably going to kill us in the long run. The problem is complex and persnickety. On one hand, we have the food industry over here, talking about how they've had to embrace all kinds of innovations and technological marvels in order to feed our insatiable appetites, but those very appetites were created by a focused drive to increase sales through making food less filling - leaving us with the impulse to eat even more. But all of those "innovations" have changed the nature of the food we consume. Genetic modifications, pesticides, herbicides, chemical treatment through processing, and insufficient oversight endanger all that we hold tasty, and mostly because of money. Read more.

NUGGETS FOR NOGGINS'
My grandfather once told me that there were two kinds of people: those who do the work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was much less competition.
Indira Gandhi (1917 - 1984)
  ON THE RECORD
If the health of our children is being threatened or there is a compounding negative affect to the environment by our current foods, it won’t help to overturn the apple cart. It is the food companies that feed us and employ a huge work force. It is an industry which should be supported.
Winston Riley, founder, Ecological Food Manufacturers Association, quoted 9/14/09, Food Processing.

I would say it's not just really focusing on the customer. It's really being obsessed with knowing the customer, understanding the customer and solving the customer
Mike Duke, CEO, Walmart, quoted 9/11/09, Supermarket News

Rosenfeld setting 'delicious' goals at Kraft
USA Today- CEO Irene Rosenfeld [pictured] will address the World Business Forum in New York on Oct. 7 and tell executives how she led Kraft Foods through "transitional change" when it became a giant company in its own right after its 2007 spinoff from Altria Group ... [Acquiring Cadbury] is a logical next step in our transformation toward a high-growth, higher-margin company," says Rosenfeld ... "to create a global powerhouse in snacks, confectionary and quick meals..." Link.

Latest IRI Study Finds Deal-Seeking Consumers Still Turning to Private Label
Private Label Growth in Every Channel, with Grocery, Drug and Dollar Stores Leading the Charge
Business Wire- Today, the economy is showing glimmers of stabilizing, energy prices have receded, and food prices are increasing at a much slower rate, but the growth of private brands continues, creating strong opportunities for retailers and serving as a cautionary tale for manufacturers ..... “The popularity of private brands will continue as a result of several factors,” says IRI Consulting and Innovation President Thom Blischok. Proposed sugar tax poses difficulty for junk food consumers
The average American devours two to three pounds of sugar a week. A tax on sugar is literally a penalty on the American culture of excess
U. of Wisconsin Daily Cardinal- Soda aficionados, next time you go grocery shopping, be sure to get enough of them, at least for the rest of the year. A panel of researchers and policy makers are advocating for a penny per ounce tax on all sugary beverages, including not only soda, but also energy drinks, many juices and ice teas. President Obama has said it’s worth considering. If the proposal becomes law, you’ll end up paying 50% more for your 12-pack refrigerator case of Mountain Dew. Link.

Food Marketing Institute Revamps Recall Portal
Will now make it easier to convey information that needs to be conveyed in the unfortunate event of a recall or a withdrawal
Supermarket News- Food Marketing Institute is scheduled to unveil today a revamped version of its online recall portal, dubbed Rapid Recall Exchange, that it hopes will facilitate the dissemination of recall information ... The new version has been in test since late last month after improvements based on consultation with users ... FMI is promoting a free trial sign-up period through Oct. 30 that allows users to test the system through the end of the year. Link.

Product Review: Kellogg's Low Fat Granola with Raisins
The reviewer's conclusion: "Probably not as good for you as it pretends to be. And that's a good thing"
Denver Westword- What isn't in this stuff? There's whole oats and whole grain wheat, some of it fused together in random wads, like meteorites collecting fragments during the trip through space, other parts shattered into jagged fragments. Add raisins, almonds and rice and the results resemble an explosion at Whole Foods. Oh, the humanity. Link.

The tax code shouldn't be used to punish people for the food they choose because some activist groups and government regulators don't approve of consumers' choices. Taxing soda is just an example of the paternalistic politics that thinks that decisions about what to eat and drink are better left to Washington politicians instead of us.
9/21/09 comment in the Baltimore Sun by J. Justin Wilson, Center for Consumer Freedom.

New Research Finds Most African American Women with Lactose Intolerance Manage Their Condition by Limiting or Avoiding Dairy
A new Lactose Intolerance in Multicultural Communities Survey sponsored by the Lactaid Brand found that 78 percent of African American women reduce the amount of milk or dairy in their diet as a way to manage their lactose intolerance. Yet, 48 percent of African American women who have lactose intolerance worry the condition keeps them from consuming important nutrients, such as calcium and vitamins A and D. Despite their concerns, only 16 percent have talked to a health care professional about lactose intolerance. The study found that half of African American women are unsure about what foods are safe to eat without triggering symptoms and 12 percent remove dairy from their diet completely as a way to control their lactose intolerance. This is concerning as dairy foods and beverages contain essential nutrients that are important for a healthy lifestyle.

Editorial: Soda tax will curtail obesity, bolster health care
Under the contentious proposed tax on soft drinks, a can of soda might cost more than that crumpled dollar bill in your pocket. The tax, which has yet to make its way through Congress, on sugary soft drinks won’t be limited to soda pop, however. Energy drinks, sports beverages, juices and iced-tea will be taxed, as well, according to The New York Times. Diet sodas are exempt from the tax despite their potentially harmful artificial sweeteners. As Americans, we’re somewhat accustomed to governmental regulation of what goes into our bodies. Cigarettes and alcohol are far from healthy — we’ve known that for decades. The causes behind obesity are complex and diverse. The tax sure isn’t a magic fix for swelling obesity rates. But who said it was supposed to be? The tax probably won’t be enough to deter the steadfast soda lover. Yet it might be enough to persuade an addict to cut down by a can or two a day.

Product Review: AOL Food Editors Choose Boar's Head Delicatessen Style Mustard
In a mustard taste test conducted by AOL Food, Boar's Head Delicatessen Style Mustard was voted as best in category for deli/brown mustard. Choosing from more than five dozen varieties, all nationally available in supermarkets for less than $3.99, reviewers from AOL Food, http://food.aol.com, selected Boar's Head as their favorite deli/brown mustard. AOL Food gave the following review: "There were audible gasps and mmmms from tasters as they dipped into this full-bodied, grainy mustard. White wine and horseradish pair up to propel an artfully balanced nip and tang strong enough to assert its presence on a hearty sandwich, and complementary to all ingredients." Said one, "This is how mustard is supposed to taste.'" Other categories included yellow, honey, Dijon, hot, and overall favorite. Twenty-one brands were voted either a favorite or a runner up.
