Cadbury CEO now sees 'benefit' in Kraft deal?
All you have to do is scan the UK wires to figure out that Cadbury is like one of those injured animals in an African flick, immobile on the ground with vultures circle nearby. At least one vulture. One incredibly huge vulture. I am starting to sense that Cadbury's CEO Todd Stitzer knows the end, if not near, is looming. He is even beginning to acknowledge, begrudgingly, that living in Kraft's universe is not the worst thing that could happen. So what is holding this up? What holds up all attempted takeovers, one company thinks there are not enough chips on the table while the other company declares its bid to be fair and final. Hah! Reminds me of the famous line uttered by the late John Belushi in the movie '1941' - "Over? Did you say over? Nothing is over until we decide it is. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell, no." Cadbury is not quite ready to say 'it's over'. Who knows, another suitor (unlikely) might decide to up the ante and force Kraft to count up more cash. But I believe this is going to happen if only because it seems to make sense; it strengthens the global clout of each of these giants. Other suitors? Who can afford to jump in? Nestle? The cost of the Wrigley takeover probably keeps the Swiss confectionery giant on the sidelines. Hershey? Can it swallow an entity as big as Cadbury? Mars? If interested it would've been in the scrum by now. No, I'm thinking this deal gets done by Kraft as Cadbury's hard stance starts to mellow.

NUGGETS FOR NOGGINS'
We are told that talent creates its own opportunities. But it sometimes seems that intense desire creates not only its own opportunities, but its own talents.
Eric Hoffer (1902 - 1983)
  ON THE RECORD
The brand manager is the representative of the consumer in the company. This is not about sitting down and reading research papers. You have to go and be with the consumer. Everything from packaging to pricing is borne out of this deep understanding of the consumer. Even though Oreo was an international brand, if we had gone with exactly the same product, the same pricing, the same packaging in China, we wouldn't have been successful. And it hadn't been moving for four-five years there; today it is the No. 1 biscuit brand in China.
Pradeep Pant, Kraft's president for Asia-Pacific, quoted 9/14/09, Wall Street Journal.

To us, [Hispanic marketing] it’s a no-brainer. You’re either in the game or you’re dead
Mark K. Stewart, VP of global media services for Kraft Foods, quoted 9/16/09, BroadcastingCable.com

Motley Fool Analyst Cites Two Big Reasons to Loathe Campbell Soup
Motley Fool- Last week, I warmed up a pot of love for Campbell, naming the iconic soup and sauce maker a consistent performer for uncertain times. In this follow-up profile, I'll do my darnedest to sour your appetite for shares ..... While regularly rebranding and rolling out new products is a perfectly acceptable business strategy, it's a daily battle that by definition has losers. Link.

General Mills stockholders vote for a 'say on pay' St. Paul Pioneer Press- Over the company's wishes, General Mills shareholders approved a "say on pay" proposal that will give stockholders a voice on what company executives are paid ... The vote, 117 million shares in favor and 111 million opposed, drew some gasps when announced at Monday's annual shareholders meeting in Minneapolis. Link.

Salmonella Outbreak Fears Fade, Peanut butter consumers are back!
Kellogg Co: Weekly sales of Keebler and Austin Peanut Butter sandwich crackers now match or exceed sales before the outbreak
Omaha World-Herald- Retail sales of peanut products reflect that the nation’s peanut eaters have pretty much blacked out the traumatic memories of January and February, when the sales of grocery store peanut butter — which were never linked to the outbreak — plunged almost 25 percent, and every day the Food and Drug Administration added dozens of products to its recall list, which reached to more than 3,200 ... Today, grocery store peanut butter sales, which had dipped to $67.5 million for the month of February, have almost fully recovered, to about $78 million during a four-week period in July and August, according to Information Resources. New report makes the case for nationwide soda tax
The report states that current soft drink taxes – in place in 33 states – are too small to affect obesity rates
By Caroline Scott-Thomas, Food Navigator- The idea of taxing sugary beverages to reduce obesity and bring public health benefits has been raised again in a new report published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The paper is a collaborative endeavor from a number of key proponents of soda taxes, including Dr Kelly Brownell, who has previously compared the food and tobacco industries, and Dr Barry Popkin, author of The World is Fat, which discusses the link between obesity and increased consumption of sugary drinks. Name-brand foods make gains on private labels
Citigroup: "Sales and volume trends for branded foods have been strengthening, while private-label sales and volume trends have lost steam past several months"
MarketWatch- U.S. makers of name-brand foods are making some inroads on cheaper store brands, according to research issued late Sunday from Citigroup. For the four-week period ended Sept. 5, branded food manufacturers gained 20 basis points of dollar market share from private-label brands over the same period last year -- marking the first time since late 2006 they have gained share, Citigroup said. Green Profits: Room Temperature Ice Cream
Unilever management shrewd enough to apply "Carbon Code" to their product lines to comply with existing regulation in the EU and prepare for what’s coming in the US
CNBC.com- In an unlikely example of cracking "The Carbon Code," Unilever scientists are developing an ice cream that can be stored and transported at room temperature. Think about the energy required to freeze ice cream, transport and store it in freezers at grocery stores, and keep it cold until you’re ready to consume it. All of that energy — and related carbon footprint — is reduced to just the energy you need to chill it before serving. Link.

The Smart Choices label is a marketing fraud. It's a manipulative, dishonest food package labeling system that is intentionally designed by the processed food companies to mislead and misinform consumers into buying processed food products, in my view.

Are health claims curbing freedom of speech?
The US FDA is being sued over its health claims regime – actions that are unlikely to succeed according to most pundits – but they raise serious questions about healthy food messaging and free speech that are being felt globally. The actions are based on the idea that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not abiding by First Amendment principles of free speech that have been applied in various court cases in the past 10 years. In referencing those cases that affirmed, in essence, that companies should be able to make non-misleading claims about products even when the science is not conclusive, the present actions accuse the FDA of breaking the law.

Healthy Eating Study Finds Ongoing Opportunity for Produce
While fresh fruits and vegetables tend to have a “health halo” with consumers, a new study finds there are still many opportunities for the fruit and vegetable industry to be more aggressive in connecting these products to healthy eating and healthy aging. Sponsored by the Produce Marketing Association (PMA), “Healthy Eating Trends 2009” from Bellevue, Wash.-based The Hartman Group offers a comprehensive look at the attitudes and preferences that guide the food choices consumers make on a daily basis. “This study is particularly interesting because it is not constrained to specific fresh food departments, channels, store formats or even retail-vs.-foodservice food purchases,” said Julia Stewart, spokeswoman for the Newark, Del.-based PMA. “The implications of the trends identified in this research will really help produce companies focus their health marketing and messaging in the future.”
