No difference between smoking and drinking soda? Huh?
In their exuberance to find new taxes to heap upon an already over-taxed public, the brains (sic) in Washington are justifying their call for a nationwide soda tax by comparing soda to tobacco. Ooooh, are we frightened now? Shoot, I even heard one Froot Loop on a talk show say it is no coincidence that "the first three letters in diet soda spell DIE!" I'm tired of these fools trying to run their make-believe science down our throats. Please tell me, where is the correlation that ties the scientific evidence against tobacco to the scientific evidence gathered on soda? We know tobacco kills. We know that because science has proven it. Now show me the scientific evidence that says soda kills. Please, show it to me. They can't. What they have done is link soda to obesity, and of course the thought today is that obesity kills! It's hard to argue that obesity isn't risky to one's life. But tax soda? What, that's the only food that causes obesity? Hey, pals, why stop there? How about meat, potatoes, ice cream, milk, bread and other bakery products, all fast food, and anything else that has carbs, cals, fats in the ingredients list ... yeah, all of it because, well, it all contributes to obesity. So why just soda? Because these bums want to tax us and they've decided soda is their sacrificial lamb of choice. But please, IT IS ABOUT THE TAX! IT IS NOT ABOUT THE SODA! Soda is not cigarettes. Soda, taken in moderation, doesn't kill us. And even if not taken in moderation, it doesn't kill us. Not soda by itself. Too many Americans have become soft and stupid and just buy into whatever c**p the government shoves our way. Fine, just don't tell us it's because soda is dangerous, like cigarettes, and ya'll just want to save our lives. What poppycock that is.

NUGGETS FOR NOGGINS'
If you don't have a competitive advantage, don't compete.
Jack Welch
  ON THE RECORD
Convenience is how easy it is to get what you want. That includes whether it's readily available, whether it's easy to do or use, and how much it costs. If something is less expensive, it's naturally more convenient because it's easier for more people to get it.
Excerpt from Kevin Maney's new book, Trade-Off: Why Some Things Catch On, and Others Don't (Broadway Books).

Adding vitamins and minerals does not make fatty or sugary food healthier, any more than a shot of tequila becomes healthy if you use it to wash down a One-A-Day tablet

Dean Foods' Blasted For "a little label and its lies"; Natural Is Not Organic!
U. of Arizona, Arizona Daily Wildcat- The problem is, some Silk products are no longer organic ..... Finding organic soybeans a bit too expensive for the revenue they wanted to generate, Dean Foods began introducing lines of Silk Soymilk that replaced the ever reliable “organic” label with the word “natural.” So what’s the big deal? ..... Dean Foods: it seems a bit like you’re trying to scam customers. If Silk is no longer organic why not take the label off completely instead of replacing it with a confusing word such as “natural.” Link.

Questions raised over probiotic benefits Toronto Globe & Mail- A major part of the problem is that the popularity of probiotics among consumers has attracted companies that may not have invested in research to prove their products have a health benefit, said John Bienenstock, professor of medicine and pathology at McMaster University in Hamilton. “There's people jumping on the bandwagon and I think that's the problem that we've got,” said Dr. Bienenstock, who is also director of the Brain-Body Institute at St. Joseph's Health Care. Analyst Says Cadbury CEO Doesn't Expect Kraft To Walk Away
Stitzer's stance "marks a softening in Cadbury's stance. Just 10 days ago, Kraft was dismissed as a "low-growth conglomerate" and its bid "unappealing"
Nasdaq.com- Cadbury's Todd Stitzer was speaking to investors in London and, although the firm has yet to disclose Stitzer's comments, BofA analyst Simon Archer summarized them for clients in a note Wednesday. "Todd admitted that there is some strategic sense in combining the two companies and he doesn't expect Kraft to walk away, so he said his job is to get as much as value as possible," said Archer ... Archer also quoted Kraft Chief Executive Irene Rosenfeld at the same conference as saying that Cadbury was "quite a compelling opportunity but not at any price." Link.

Study Identifies the Least Price-Sensitive Consumers
A consumer’s “NEO-ness” is not defined by wealth, income or age per se -- it is a measure of spending habits, attitudes and behavior
By Becky Ebenkamp, Progressive Grocer- Is there such a thing as a recession-proof consumer? A new study posits the idea that there is and identifies 59 million such U.S. adults who are a marketer’s dream -- especially during a recession. Those consumers, called NEOs (for “New Economic Order”), are somewhat immune to financial fads because they value individuality and design over getting the lowest price. They are even-keel spenders over time, so less likely to shut their wallets during economic downturns. Link.

Lactaid-funded Study: Lactose intolerance is prevalent in several ethnic groups
Up to 75% of all African-American, Jewish, Native American and Mexican-American adults, and 90% of Asian-American adults are lactose intolerant
By Carina Perkins, Food Navigator- The survey, Lactose Intolerance in Multicultural Communities Survey, revealed that up to 78 percent of African American and 77 percent of Hispanic women reduce the amount of milk or dairy in their diet as a way to manage lactose intolerance. As a result, 48 percent of African American and 63 percent of Hispanic women worry that they are not getting enough of important nutrients, such as calcium and vitamins A and D, and most are keen to keep some sort of dairy their diet because of its health benefits. I like the idea of a small tax on sugary beverages. On soda a 3 cent tax per 12-ounce serving could generate $24 billion in four years. Will it makes us healthier? I don't know. But even if there's not much evidence that soda taxes will squeeze our waistlines, the important thing is that they can improve our bottom line. The point of a tax, any tax, is to raise money for the government. The added benefit of a sin tax is that by taxing something you consider harmful, you can win in two ways. If you don't discourage consumption of the taxed good, revenues go up. If you do discourage consumption of the taxed good, then congratulations, you've reduced the sin you considered harmful in the first place.

Starbucks, Walmart talk up green initiatives
Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz (pictured), described how, on a recent trip to Rwanda, a female coffee farmer told him (through a translator) that all she wanted was a cow and some fresh milk for her children. Such insights, Schultz said, are helping the coffee giant sharpen its sustainability focus while improving how the company and its farmers cultivate and grow its coffee beans for consumers. Rob Walton, executive committee chairman and board member of Wal-Mart Stores, likewise spoke at length about reducing its environmental impact through recent measures like a "sustainability index" for packaged-goods consumers. (Similar to the nutritional labels, Walmart's new ratings system evaluates products based on their carbon footprint.) "When informed, customers will make good choices," Walton said ..... Going green, however, also has its risks. If the message doesn't come across as genuine, consumers can become cynical. "Money can buy you trial and awareness, but consumers are so smart that over time they'll see through it," Schultz said.

McDonald’s the holy grail for potato farmers
From the fields of Idaho to tasting rooms in suburban Chicago, potato farmers, researchers and industry representatives are in the midst of an elusive hunt: finding a new spud for McDonald's french fries. A decade has passed since the fast-food giant last added a new U.S. potato variety to three others approved for its golden fries, something that both irks and motivates potato researchers who hope their progeny will be next ..... Because McDonald's buys more than 3.4 billion pounds of U.S. potatoes annually, it has the power to dictate whether a variety sprouts or winds up in the less-lucrative supermarket freezer's crinklecut bin — or worse yet, banished to become dehydrated taters. "It's a card game where McDonald's holds nine-tenths of the cards," said Jeanne Debons, the Potato Variety Management Institute's director..

First cage-free pasteurized shell eggs can protect consumers from sickness
National Pasteurized Eggs (NPE) said it is now producing the industry’s first cage-free pasteurized shell egg to serve the foodservice industry and consumers throughout the United States ..... Texas Tech University, located in Lubbock TX, is serving the cage-free pasteurized shell eggs that are free from salmonella to its faculty, guests, and 28,000 students in its dining halls and other foodservice outlets. NPE’s pasteurized shell eggs are processed using a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved patented pasteurization process recognized by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to inactivate the Salmonella and avian influenza virus. The FDA estimates 2.3 million eggs contaminated with Salmonella enteritidis were sold in 2008.

Regarding Belushi screw-up and Cadbury 'softening'
Hi Bob - I am sure you have already heard this, but the line you quoted was from "Animal House," not 1941. The only two lines I can remember from "1941" are when Belushi puts his aviator goggles on and says "Look, I'm a BUG!" and the Japanese submariner looking into Southern California and keeps saying "Hollywood...." ..... Regarding the softening of Cadbury's CEO, I think it might be as a result of the possible board tongue lashing he may have received after posting a very public, not very savvy rebuttal to Dame Rosenthal's overture...
"Just Jim" is a Morning Cup subscriber.

Bob's Spin: Just Jim, you have no idea how many readers I heard from who said I got the Belushi reference wrong. How about 236? The famous line — "Over? Did you say over? Nothing is over until we decide it is. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell, no" —  was indeed from Animal House. Regarding your comments on the Cadbury CEO softening, I think you may have nailed it. That was a nasty insult hurled at Kraft by Cadbury CEO Todd Stitzer. But it was an insult that may have hastened Cadbury's journey into Kraft's cupboard. Email Bob.
