The
Pepsi Generation: Fat, Poorer and Diabetic
Blog by Joel Epstein, The Huffington
Post— Who knew? Obesity and soda consumption are two sides of
the same coin. A new study by UCLA's Center for Health Policy and the
California Center for Public Health Advocacy (CCPHA) shows a strong
correlation between soda consumption and weight. Specifically, the
study's researchers found that adults who drink a soda or more a day are
27 percent more likely to be overweight than those who don't. Pop!
What's my excuse? I only drink LA's finest tap water, or seltzer when
I'm feeling flush. I barely reach for Coke or Pepsi. The thought that in
this economy Californians are wasting their hard earned dough on a
product that makes them fat and diabetic instead of drinking
zero-calorie and virtually free tap water is baffling. You can bet the
bottlers are all over this with their allies the birthers, the Howard
Jarvis sound-alikes, and the No to National Health Insurance crazies.
Throw in the I Hate the Food Police folks...and you've got the worst
party since John McCain's election night gala ..... With the link
between soda and obesity now conclusive, consider the damage being done
to our children. In too many households they are being raised on the
stuff.

ON THE RECORD
Brands
are more than just names, colors or logos — think Coca-Cola's
red or McDonald's golden arches. A brand includes all the
elements of a product or service from its design, ingredients
and manufacture to its marketing, advertising and logo. A
well-honed brand evokes in consumers an emotion and a promise of
what it will deliver, without the consumer having to do much —
if any — research.

director, Landor Associates, quoted 9/18/09, USA Today. |

Nestle
mulls shift to
'well-being' company
Reuters.com— Nestle is
mulling a move towards a greater focus on "well-being" as it
seeks higher-margin business for the future, its chairman said.
"It's a more holistic concept," Peter Brabeck (pictured)
said. The focus would be more on personal care offerings for
customers that would create higher value for the company,
Brabeck said, adding that no decision on a strategy shift had
been taken and that the issue was still under discussion.

Report: Premium Consumers Who Have Taken Financial
Hit Are More Likely To Shop For Organic And Natural Foods
Effects
of economic turmoil are being seen not only in types of food products consumers
are buying, but in which retail channels and chains they are flocking to
Official Spin— The economic turmoil that
reached crisis level in fall 2008 has been a bull in the china shop of American
consumer behavior, even for a market as fundamental as food. Food spending,
fueled by price increases but dampened by consumer cutbacks, took on a
volatility that matched the chaotic economic trajectories of American consumers.
Even within the premium cohort of upscale-to-affluent U.S. adults ($75K+
individuals; $100K+ households), as of first quarter 2009, nearly a fifth
described themselves as significantly worse off than they were a year ago, and
nearly a fourth described themselves as somewhat worse off.

Speculation Nestlé, Hershey involved in Cadbury
takeover bid
Analysts
believe that Switzerland’s Nestlé and America’s Hershey may still come forward
and table a joint bid
The York Press (UK)— Nestlé is at the centre
of growing speculation that it may become involved in a bid for rival British
confectionery firm Cadbury. The markets are buzzing with rumors about the future
of Cadbury, after it rejected an offer by Kraft. The American giant is now
understood to be planning an £11 billion hostile bid for the Dairy Milk firm.
Experts say a Nestlé/Cadbury union would almost certainly fall foul of the UK
competition authorities.

9 In 10 High Schoolers Lack Fruits, Veggies
Less
than 10 percent of U.S. high school students are eating the combined recommended
daily amount of fruits and vegetables, a finding that the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention called "poor" in a report Tuesday. The report
based on 2007 data found that only 13 percent of U.S. high school students get
at least three servings of vegetables a day and just 32 percent get two servings
of fruit. Less than 1 in 10 get enough of both combined. Some states --
including Arkansas and North Carolina -- were significantly below those
averages. But some New England states, particularly Vermont, were notably better
..... CDC officials said the findings indicate a disheartening gap between how
people should be eating and what they're actually doing in an era of rampant
obesity. Federal nutrition goals for 2010 call for at least 75 percent of
Americans to eat two servings of fruit each day and at least 50 percent to eat
three vegetable servings. "This is a call for states, communities, schools and
families to support increased fruit and vegetable consumption," said Heidi
Blanck, a CDC senior scientist who worked on the report.

A whopper of an illusion is being shattered by
Burger King ads
On
Sunday, during an interminable 400-miler from Dover, Del., I saw a commercial
that made me sit bolt upright in my Barcalounger, an ad that in its innocence
and whimsy and desire for eyeballs would destroy one of the most valuable
illusions of advertising. That illusion: In celebrity product endorsements,
celebrities get to lie. During a live webcast Oct. 20, NASCAR star Tony Stewart
will be hooked up to a polygraph and asked: Does Tony really love Burger King's
Whopper sandwich? The webcast will be the climax of a monthlong campaign by
Crispin Porter + Bogusky -- "The Truth About Tony" -- that seeks to demonstrate
that Stewart actually, really, truly loves eating Whoppers. It's especially
telling that a NASCAR driver is being asked to make this demonstration of
product fealty. The one thing these guys have got is street cred.

LongHorn Steakhouse Boss: 'Our goal is to become a
national brand'
LongHorn
Steakhouse opened in 1981 with a single restaurant on Peachtree Road, where it
got off to a slow start until a rush-hour snowstorm sent people inside for
refuge. That helped generate the word-of-mouth marketing that turned it into a
local institution. Nearly three decades later, LongHorn is part of giant Darden
Restaurants, which bought its former owner, RARE Hospitality, for $1.19 billion
in 2007. The steakhouse chain has 323 locations - up from 287 pre-Darden - in 30
states, plus five in Puerto Rico. But LongHorn is still an upstart compared to
No. 1 Outback Steakhouse, with 950 units, and runs third behind Texas Roadhouse
in revenue even though it has slightly more units, according to the Nation's
Restaurant News annual ranking. Dave George (pictured), LongHorn's
president, recently was in Atlanta for a series of company events and talked
about the homegrown chain's future.
