Leading Off  
Did General Mills retreat from its plan to eliminate artificial flavors, colors and ingredients in some of its products, like Trix? Nope. And yet colorful, tasty original Trix are back on shelves, now called Classic Trix. But also on the shelves are the newer, less artificial Trix. General Mills simply did what smart marketers should always do: listen to your consumers. And millions of consumers were not happy with the re-jigged Trix. So now both share shelf space. I, for one, am very happy. If I'm going to indulge and eat Trix at all, then what the hell, just give me the full shot - sugar, artificial colors, artificial flavors, every bleeping bad thing that makes this cereal so damned tasty. It should be my call and General Mills gave me that power without abandoning its new, cleaner Trix. So, no whining! You want the new Trix, great, gor fot it. it's still there. For the rest of us, General Mills has given us back the real deal, which is now sitting in my cereal cupboard. It's all good...

Kellogg to Acquire Clean-Label Protein Bar Maker RXBAR for $600 Million
Powder Bulk Solids - Delving deeper into the snacks category, Kellogg Company said Friday that it plans to acquire Chicago Bar Company LLC, the maker of America's fastest growing nutrition bar brand, RXBAR, for $600 million. "RXBAR is a unique and innovative company. Its values, people, and cutting-edge approach represent an exciting opportunity for our business. Adding a pioneer in clean-label, high-protein snacking to our portfolio bolsters our already strong wholesome snacks offering," said Kellogg Company chief executive officer Steve Cahillane in a press release. Made from egg whites, fruit and nuts, RXBAR offers 12 grams of protein per bar in 11 flavor varieties. The company also recently launched a line of bars for children featuring smaller portions and kid-friendly flavors. "With its strong millennial consumption and diversified channel presence including e-commerce, RXBAR is perfectly positioned to perform well against future food trends," said Cahillane. Read.

Will Giving Hens Better Living Conditions Make Egg Prices Skyrocket?
Modern Farmer - The Humane Society recently filed an initiative in California demanding that the state's egg-laying hens be given more space--enough to essentially mandate a cage-free life for the state's birds. Not surprisingly, trade groups have decried the initiative as over-regulation at the hands of activist groups. At the same time, a new study from from Purdue University researchers seemingly suggests that improving animal welfare in the egg industry will result in dramatic price increases for the average American consumer. But look beyond the headlines and you'll see something weird: even though the researchers are claiming over-regulation and price hikes, their data doesn't seem to back that up..... Livestock groups are not pleased about this initiative, fearing that requiring more space will force farmers to build new housing and reduce their output, cutting into what is already a minimal profit. Jim Monroe, a spokesman at the National Pork Producers Council--under the initiative, pigs would also have their minimum space extended--responded in a statement. "Livestock production practices should be left to those who are most informed about animal care--farmers--and not animal rights activists..." Read.

Jonathan Atwood of Unilever North America hasn't found the answer yet, but he does know it's the key to a successful sustainability program. "How do you make it cool to say that taking a five- or six-minute shower - or maybe even turning down the temperature - is actually the good thing to do, the right thing to do?" said Atwood, VP of sustainable business and communications at the Netherlands-based consumer goods company. "We continue to struggle with how to do this. Will it take a regulatory change where we mandate that all new homes must have low-flow shower heads? Fox 32 Chicago - A big breakthrough Thursday for those demanding a repeal of Cook County's tax on sweetened beverages. They appear to have the votes needed to repeal it next week. As chairman of the finance committee, John Patrick Daley is the second most powerful person on the Cook County board..... "I made a decision after hearing from the people of my community," Daley said. "The residents, the business owners, the store owners... I think basically they're saying we've been taxed and taxed. Canada: The rollout of the first genetically modified food animal is being bungled
Quartz - Four-and-a-half tons of genetically modified salmon have been released into the Canadian food market, and consumers have no way of knowing exactly where.
The release has roiled GM food skeptics, who say there's no way for them to figure out whether the fish--sold by Massachusetts-based AquaBounty Technologies--were purchased by Canadian retailers, restaurants, or food service operators.
