Leading Off
Halloween-scary is a year-round pursuit for the anti-soda, anti-sugar crowd... In fact, one of the headlines in one of today's stories claims two cans of Coke a week can "Kill You".... KILL YOU! ... Two measly cans of soda a week (that's right, not each day, but each week) and you are at risk of checking out of...life? Please, stop it with the endless stream of death threats associated with everything from soda to cereal to ice cream and candy. And meat... and, well, unless you have some weird twenty-four-seven craving for kale or other green stuff, you are told your desire for tasty, carb-laden foods and beverages is a one-way ticket to the graveyard. I've always said it, and I'll stick to it: you can consume just about anything in moderation (to me, two cans of soda a week is moderation)... These clowns who are trying to shove bugs down our throats and other vegan options can't seem to do it on the merits, so they push their agenda by degrading the foods and beverages the rest of us are consuming. It ain't working!

Packaging's Role in the Changing Food Landscape
"People are still making purchasing decisions by looking at the packaging, whether they're looking at food in the store on the shelf or shopping online"
Meat & Poultry - Dr. John Stanton, professor of Food Marketing at Saint Joseph's Univ. in Philadelphia, has been working in the food marketing industry for 40 years. During those 40 years, there have been a lot of changes in the food landscape -- but Stanton feels the most change has occurred in the past five years. "There are so many more channels of distribution now," he says. "There's more impact from social media. More technology. There are so many ways to communicate with and sell to consumers today."..... Stanton explained that one of the biggest changes that the food industry has to contend with today is the changes in family households. Three groups are affecting the food landscape today are:
-- The sandwich generation -- adults that are both taking care of their parents and taking care of their kids and the same time;
-- Boomerang kids -- adults that are going back to live with their parents later in life; and
-- Millennials.
"Millennials behave differently, shop differently and eat differently," Stanton explained. Read.

Starbucks To Sell Tazo Tea Brand To Unilever For $384 Million
Forbes - Starbucks may be shuttering its Teavana stores, but it hasn't given up on the brand. On the contrary, it's counting on Teavana to be its primary vessel for tea sales: the coffee giant announced Thursday that it is selling its Tazo tea business to Unilever for nearly $400 million. Unilever, the consumer products behemoth behind brands like Ben & Jerry's, Lipton, Pure Leaf and more, has agreed to buy the Tazo brand and its related recipes, intellectual property and inventory from Starbucks for $384 million. For Starbucks, which acquired Tazo in 1999 for $8.1 million, the deal marks a more-than 47-times return on investment. While Tazo has logged $112 million in sales over the last twelve months, Starbucks believes that it will be better-served by focusing on further developing the Teavana business. Read.

Researchers: Just Two Cans of Coke a Week Could Kill You 'Hiking Your Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke
The Sun - Drinking just two cans of fizzy drink a week increases your risk of deadly heart disease and stroke. Your favourite pop is also driving up your risk of diabetes. The sugar-laden drinks have long been known to cause obesity, which is linked to an array of different health problems. And now new research suggests drinking just one 330ml can of soft drink can cause your blood pressure to spike as many of them contain 14 more grams than your daily recommended sugar intake. Experts have discovered that sugar-sweetened drinks are linked to a metabolic syndrome - a cluster of risk factors that raise your risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes... Read.

Is 'Natural Flavor' Healthier Than 'Artificial Flavor'?
WABE 90.1 FM - When consumers see "natural flavor" on a beverage label, they shouldn't assume that someone is zesting oranges into their bottle... Even though natural flavor must come from natural sources, it need not all come from the plant or meat whose flavor is being mimicked. For example, orange flavor might contain not only orange extract, but also extracts from bark and grass. So if companies are trying to approximate flavors like orange, why not just use oranges? The answer comes down to availability, cost and flexibility, according to flavor chemist Gary Reineccius, of the University of Minnesota. Read.

Just Using the Word 'Snack' Can Make You Fat
DeathRattleSports.com - It's no secret that Americans often overeat and, whether we want to admit it or not, food marketing plays a major role. Now a new study reveals that just seeing the word "snack" on a food label may lead consumers to eat more. In a small study published in the journal Appetite, researchers from the University of Surrey studied how eating behavior is influenced when food is presented using the word snack or meal. Read.

Berry is top choice in flavored water
BeverageDaily.com - Bottled water volume sales are seeing continued strong growth, driven by consumers' search for alternatives to sugary drinks. And these trends are benefiting the flavored water category, according to Comax Flavors. This year the company surveyed 500 people between the ages of 18 and 70 to find out more about attitudes to flavored water..... According to the survey, berry was found to be the most consumed flavored water flavor preferred by 60% of baby boomers, 59% of Gen Z, and 57% of Gen Y. Read.

Organic is mainstream but misunderstood
The Packer - There's no doubt organic food has a health halo, as organic produce sales grow each year, but consumers may not know why they're buying it. A new study shows consumers see organic and non-GMO labels as interchangeable, which isn't really a good thing. The study's authors surveyed more than 1,000 consumers about what they would pay for a pack of granola bars or a pound of apples based on their labels. Read.

That Organic Chicken On Your Plate: Did It Really Get To Walk Outside?
BuzzFeed News - What does it mean to be an organic chicken? The US Department of Agriculture and organic food advocates are locked in a fierce battle over just what "organic" means, specifically with regard to poultry welfare. How much living space should organic chickens be entitled to? How much access should they have to the outdoors? While rules established in the twilight of the Obama administration would make life nicer for chickens raised organically -- giving them more elbow room and time in the sun -- the Trump administration has delayed implementation of these rules, perhaps indefinitely. Bojangles' to Test Delivery, Ramp Up Value Focus
QSR magazine (press release) - "Consumer spending remains soft, and it appears those with lower household incomes have been impacted more than others. The competition from convenience and grocery store is still a concern for many," president and CEO Clifton Rutledge said during a conference call Wednesday. "Consumers are staying at home more and using delivery. And of course, aggressive deep discounting from larger national brands with significant greater marketing budgets continues to attract consumers away from small, regional players." Read.
