Food Industry Execs Launch Farm&Oven Snack Brand
PR Web (press release) - Two food industry veterans announce the launch of Farm&Oven Snacks, Inc., a Boulder, Colorado-based snack brand. The company was founded by Kay Allison and Mike Senackerib whose innovations for big food companies have generated billions of dollars in revenue..... "Farm&Oven is truly a personal passion for me inspired by my autistic daughter who wouldn't let a vegetable cross her lips," says Kay Allison, co-founder, Farm&Oven. "I tried many things to get her to eat more vegetables and found that including them in a snack or meal she enjoyed was the answer. I knew that if we created something that was delicious, healthy and had a soft, moist texture it would appeal not only to picky eaters but to anyone -- kids and adults alike - looking for a convenient, nutritious snack." Tyson Foods Beefs Up Foodservice Business with Acquisition of Original Philly Holdings
GlobeNewswire (press release) - Tyson Foods has completed the acquisition of Philadelphia-based Original Philly Holdings, Inc., one of the nation's leading producers of raw and fully-cooked Philly-style sandwich steak and cheesesteak appetizer products. "Original Philly Holdings is a natural, strategic fit with our Prepared Foods Business," said Tyson Foods Prepared Foods Group President Sally Grimes. "The Original Philly brand and portfolio of products are highly regarded in the foodservice industry and have a growing list of customer relationships with chain and convenience store operators." Original Philly Holdings consists of two business units: Original Philly Cheesesteak Company, which manufactures raw Philly Style sandwich steak products, and Philadelphia Pre-Cooked Steak Company, which manufactures fully-cooked Philly-style sandwich steak products. Its customers include foodservice, retail and convenience store providers. The company, which employs approximately 250 people, operates two plants in Philadelphia, Pa. Read.

Study: Consumers Confused About How Much Whole Grain to Eat
FoodBev.com - There is significant confusion among consumers across the globe about how much whole grain should be consumed daily, according to new research from Cereal Partners Worldwide. While more than eight in ten people (82%) believe it is important to eat whole grain, almost the same number (83%) admit they don't know how much they should consume. Less than half (47%) of those surveyed think they eat enough. The new study of over 16,000 people across the globe by Cereal Partners Worldwide, the producer of Nestle Breakfast Cereals, suggests that part of the confusion may be due to people not knowing how much whole grain to consume or where to find whole grain, with almost four in ten (38%) saying they think people don't know what foods contain it. Chipotle Shares Tank After Actor Jeremy Jordan Said He 'Almost Died' After Eating at the Chain
CNBC - Chipotle Mexican Grill's stock price sank 2.7 percent Monday after "Supergirl" actor Jeremy Jordan said he had "almost died" from eating at one of the chain's restaurants. Chipotle has been struggling for two years to move on from a string of high-profile foodborne illness outbreaks. "I know I've advocated for them in the past, but they're terrible," Jordan said in the now-expired Instagram story, according to People magazine. "I, as you can see, am in the hospital and I have fluids in my arm because the food did not agree with me and I almost died." Read.

With Whole Foods, can Amazon fill your every need?
Chicago Booth Review (blog) - Amazon's recent acquisition of Whole Foods has triggered a lot of discussion about the motives behind the purchase. But many of these explanations can be rationalized by looking at Amazon's primary mission, which says, "At Amazon, we are committed to being the most customer-centric company on earth." That is not only a rather audacious statement; indeed, it is a tall order. And while some people may in the past have perceived the mission statement as purely aspirational, over time, with moves such as this acquisition, it is increasingly clear that Amazon is trying to make what seemed aspiration into a reality. Salted Caramel Pepsi Exists Now and Literally No One Asked For This
Column posted by Molly Thomson at College Candy (blog) - While my self-loathing has not yet reached the levels required for me to purchase this beverage, the staff at Today tried it, and stand in defense of the bizarre concoction. "Pepsi Salted Caramel isn't yucky," lifestyle editor Shane Lou said. "On the contrary, it's not bad at all. The caramel flavor isn't strong, but it's apparent enough that it'll give you a sweet aftertaste. If Pepsi is your cola of choice, it's worth giving the salted caramel flavor a shot." The tasters also agree that the salt flavor is, blessedly, missing. Read.

State of the industry: Dairy
Food Business News - The refrigerated retail dairy case continues to fatten up while the frozen cabinet embraces protein and snacking trends. These changes are taking place with clean label and local sourcing top of mind. And for as much traction that plant-based alternatives are gaining in the marketplace, dairy foods are holding ground through innovation efforts aimed at making everything from butter to yogurt relevant to today's consumers who crave flavor adventure, value authenticity and seek out natural nutrition. How to Win an Argument on Biotechnology
Commentary posted by Gary Truitt at Hoosier Ag Today - Chances are that, if you are involved in production agriculture, you have had a discussion with someone about biotechnology. Most likely, it centered around whether GMOs in food are safe. Odds are you did not win the argument or change the person's mind. Yet, getting people to trust the technology we use to produce food is key to the future of agriculture. So how do you build consumer trust in GE food?..... He notes that most who try to defend biotechnology always lead with the facts and the science. He says most consumers don't want to hear the facts and don't trust the science... Read.

Why is Locol Struggling?
QSR magazine (press release) - A few years ago, chefs Roy Choi and Daniel Patterson set out with a simple (if not grandiose) plan: to change the face of fast food by providing affordable, better-quality meals to those in the poorest neighborhoods around the country. From the start, the pair received enthusiastic support from food personalities and celebrities alike, as well as a mountain of media attention. But Locol was also greeted with wariness from those in the industry who knew what a tall order changing long-held fast-food systems and habits could be. Read.
